People generally know that bananas are very nutritious, but many wonder how many calories and carbohydrates they actually contain.

BANANA CALORIES

Bananas contain approx. 100 calories, but this can vary depending on the size of the fruit and how you consume it. Below are the calorie contents of standard banana sizes:

extra small (less than 15cm, 81 grams): 72 calories
Small (15-18cm, 101 grams): 90 calories
Average (18–20cm, 118 grams): 105 calories
Big (20–22cm, 136 grams): 121 calories
Extra big (22 cm or more, 152 grams): 135 calories
sliced (1 cup, 150 grams): 134 calories
dented (1 cup, 225 grams): 200 calories

If you’re not sure how big your banana is, you can estimate that a medium banana contains about 100 calories.

About 93% of a banana’s calories come from carbohydrates, 4% from protein and 3% from fat.

Bananas are almost exclusively made up of water and carbohydrates.

The main nutrient in bananas is carbohydrates, but the composition of carbohydrates changes dramatically during ripening.

Green bananas contain large amounts of starch, some of which is resistant starch. Resistant starch is a type of indigestible carbohydrate that escapes digestion and functions like fiber in the body.

Because banana starch is converted to sugar during ripening, ripe bananas contain much less resistant starch than unripe ones. In fact, the resistant starch content of a fully ripe banana is less than 1%.

That is, although green and ripe bananas can provide similar amounts of calories, the green banana turns out to be healthier because it contains more fiber and less sugar.
