The amount of vitamins and minerals in vegetables grown in water is on a par with vegetables grown on land. And they are not necessarily pesticide free. “The water where hydroponic vegetables grow usually receives chemical solutions and fertilizers that are absorbed by the plant’s roots,” explains nutritionist Yasmin Gonzalez, from Rio de Janeiro.

And, if this liquid becomes unbalanced, there may be an excess of nitrates – substances that alter the metabolism of vegetables, which increases the need for pesticides. When in doubt, prefer those grown traditionally – of course, if it is not possible to opt for organic ones.
