9 household items that seem to be useful, but can end up harming our health

Sometimes, it can happen that we buy some products just because they are beautiful, they are on sale, among other reasons, and we don’t even pay attention to the harm and benefits they can cause us in the long term, or if we don’t take care of them in the ideal way.

What happens is that, with the rush of everyday life, we may also not realize that some of them have been damaged after so much time of use, and we continue to keep them inside our homes without replacing them with other options that are more viable and safe.

Thinking about it, the awesome.club made a list of some utensils that, in the long term, ideally should be replaced by other options that are favorable to our health. Come with us and be sure to check out the bonus🇧🇷

9. Bath sponge

For those who love liquid soaps, using shower loofahs are an excellent option if we don’t think about their downside — which isn’t cool at all. Due to the bathroom being a humid environment and the sponges are always wet, they will create almost an army of fungi and bacteria that gradually accumulate and, of course, can be harmful to your health. The ideal, in that case, is not to use them in the long term.

8. Wooden spoon

7. Food cutting board

Just like wooden spoons, wooden boards can also proliferate mold due to humidity, but what some people may not know is that those reliefs that remain on the utensil due to cuts gather countless bacteria — including plastic ones, as these are places that we have not been able to clean completely or optimally. Choose to cut food on a plate or glass container.

6. Plastic pots

Plastic pots are so cute, right? There are several color options, designs, formats that can delight countless people, but many little know that they are not good at all and can harm our health. Some of these pots have BPA (bisphenol) which is a substance widely used in the composition of plastics and if taken to a hot temperature, they release an element that can pose a risk to our health, such as hormonal changes, gastrointestinal problems, among others.

Therefore, keep an eye on the composition of these objects and gradually replace them with options made of glass that, in addition to being safer, are also more hygienic and last much longer if you take proper care.

5. Teflon pans

Although they look beautiful and chic, Teflon pans (non-stick) have some substances that can be released when exposed to the heat of the stove (nickel, aluminum) and, consequently, contaminate our food that is inside them. But don’t despair, this only happens when they are old and peeling. Therefore, try to replace them with ceramic pots when they show signs of age.

4. Blender with plastic cup

Both acrylic and plastic can accumulate more dirt than glass, so when using your blender, be sure to clean it properly with a sponge and brush to remove the dirt that gets stuck after a few uses. A great option is to replace the plastic cup with a glass one, as it is easy to clean, hygienic, and, above all, because it does not pick up the color and odor of what is put in the container — taking care so that it does not break easily.

3. Dish and sink cloths

It’s hard not to find Brazilian homes that don’t have a good old decorated dish towel over the stove, isn’t it? And many have this cloth that, in addition to being used to dry the dishes, also decorates the appliance. But know that drying the dishes every day without changing the cloth can be an invitation to bacteria and fungi.

Due to moisture, it becomes attractive to microorganisms. So, we might as well think twice before using them near the places where we cook, like the stove, for example. One solution is to let the dishes dry naturally in a stainless steel drainer.

2. Washing machine filter

The machine’s filter gathers a lot of lint, hair and residue from our clothes and ends up being forgotten at the “bottom of the trunk”, oops! of the machine. Ideally, it should be cleaned or changed sporadically, as, like the others, it is in a damp place and will easily be the focus of molds that can give us allergies and cause other health problems.

1. Bath cap

As we mentioned earlier, the bathroom is a very humid place and is where shower caps are left after use. After so much exposure to moisture, the cap can become moldy and will need to be urgently disposed of so that it is not harmful to you. The ideal is not to use caps other than in the shower, for example to wash your face, in the environment in question to reduce fungal problems, since their useful life may not be so long. But if you don’t want to break the habit, changing them occasionally might be the best option.

Bonus: kitchen sponge

As we use sponges every day to clean different containers, they tend to accumulate a lot of waste and bacteria. A tip so that they don’t become something so dirty is to wash them with water and detergent and leave them in an airy place to dry. Now, if you don’t want to follow this trick, one option is to change it once a week.

For those looking for a more ecological alternative: buy vegetable bushings that are as good as the conventional ones — but be sure to change them after a while, see?
