Understanding how our body reacts to some diseases helps us know if we have a cold or the flu, for example.
In the respiratory part, one way to understand if we are just having an allergy or if it is something more serious, which needs a specialist analysis, is to pay attention to the color and viscosity of the nasal secretion.
O awesome.club collected 9 different types of discharge or mucus so you can find out what each of these types means.
But always see a doctor if you experience any discomfort, rather than self-medicating.
9. Clear and liquid
If you have clear and watery nasal discharge, it means that you are a healthy person. This type of mucus helps eliminate contaminants and dust, which contain antibodies and proteins, that can get into your nostrils. But sometimes it can be a sign of an allergy, especially if your nose is itchy and you’re sneezing.
8. Clear, thick or thick
It is said that this type of mucus is a sign of a chronic allergy. The nose is blocked and you may even have swollen nasal tissues. A visit to the otolaryngologist or an allergy specialist can help resolve this issue.
7. White
This type of mucus appears when you have a common cold: the white color is due to the loss of moisture in the nose, which causes the discharge to become clear and “cloudy”.
6. Yellow
It is best to get some rest and drink plenty of fluids if you notice that the color of the mucus has turned yellow. It is a definite sign of the common cold. The yellowish tinge occurs because the dead white blood cells, which fight the virus, penetrate the nasal secretion when they have finished their primary function.
5. Green
The green secretion is your good friend in the fight against the cold. It’s a sign that your body is doing everything it can to get rid of an illness.
However, if symptoms last for more than 10 days, visit a doctor, as it could be a bacterial infection.
4. Pink or red
The color pink is definitely not a good sign. It either means that you have been injured or indicates that you are blowing your nose too hard. In any case, visit a doctor if the flow doesn’t stop after half an hour or if you notice there’s blood. Also, if a child has a nosebleed, they should be taken to the pediatrician immediately.
3. Coffee
Coffee-colored mucus appears when old blood from your nasal system dries up or if you’ve inhaled dirt. Cleaning your nostrils with a seawater spray can help in this case.
2. Almost black
If you don’t smoke, then having almost black mucus could indicate a yeast infection in your respiratory system.
1. Sticky, smelly and colorless
A sticky, foul-smelling mist is a very likely sign of chronic sinusitis. The constant swelling of the nasal and throat tissues produces this type of mucus. It is recommended that you visit an ENT specialist as you may need antibiotics or other treatments to cure the infection.
Bonus
If your mucus is white, green, or yellow, it is very likely that you have a runny nose. This is indicative of colds or infections. Visit a doctor if symptoms persist for more than 2 weeks.
