9 effective ways to prevent ingrown toenails

An ingrown toenail is a common problem and occurs when the side edge of a nail grows into the surrounding skin tissue. According to statistics, 18% of American adults have experienced this condition at least once in their lives. It’s important to treat ingrown toenails as soon as they appear in order to prevent infection and keep them from getting worse.

O awesome.club presents a list of some of the most common solutions that have been tested and are very effective against this problem. Remember, prevention is always better than cure. Read this post carefully to know how to treat this type of condition if it occurs.

1. Epsom salt foot bath

Soaking your feet in warm water with Epsom salt (also known as bitter salt, magnesium sulfate) will help reduce any pain. Also, the nail will be softer and easier to cut afterwards.

Mix 2 teaspoons of Epsom salt in warm water in a foot basin. Keep your feet soaking for about 15 or 20 minutes Try to repeat the procedure approximately 3 times a day to get a better result.

2. Apple cider vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is well known for its excellent antiseptic and anti-inflammatory qualities. It will help prevent infections and relieve swollen skin.

Soak a cotton ball in apple cider vinegar. Cover your finger and cotton ball with a bandage and keep it that way for a few hours. Dry the area completely.

3. Turmeric Paste

4. Lemon juice with honey

Lemon and honey have a great antimicrobial effect on the skin. These ingredients will help against possible infection in the affected toe.

Apply a drop of lemon juice and a little honey directly on the affected finger. Cover the finger with a bandage and leave overnight. Repeat the procedure every night until the finger gets better.

5. Keep the nail raised with a cotton wedge

To keep the nail slightly elevated, place a small cotton wedge under it.

With tweezers, carefully lift the affected part of your nail. Place a small piece of cotton between the nail and the skin on the foot. Try to change the cotton wedge frequently, especially after submerging your foot in a basin or taking a shower, for example.

6. Lift the nail with a dental floss

This tip works best immediately after soaking your feet in a bowl of water, making your skin and nails softer.

Carefully lift the tip of the ingrown toenail with clean dental floss. Don’t dig the floss into the toenail too much. Repeat the procedure whenever you wet your feet.

7. Cut your toenails correctly

8. Wear comfortable shoes

Choose open-toe sandals and suitable footwear to provide additional space for your toes. The ideal shoes would be those made of soft fabrics, which allow the skin to “breathe”, leaving space between the toes.

In fact, tight, uncomfortable shoes are one of the reasons why toenails can start growing into the skin in the first place. High heels are also a cause of ingrown toenails as they add extra pressure to your toes.

9. Visit your doctor

If none of the above options help and your finger doesn’t get better in 2 or 3 days, you should see your doctor. Only he can prescribe an oral or topical antibiotic. Your trusted doctor can usually treat an ingrown toenail, but if the case seems complicated and it hurts with extreme swelling, you might want to visit a podiatrist.
