9 Curious and rather disgusting facts about the human body

In our everyday life, we are surrounded by a lot of dirt. There are many things that can change the level of cleanliness, and in many cases, we create the whole mess ourselves. But that doesn’t always mean something bad.

O awesome.club will talk in this post about processes, let’s say, kind of disgusting, but that are part of our lives.

1. The smell of sweat works as a means of transmitting emotions

Every day, the human body releases about a liter of sweat, which not only helps to cool the body, but also eliminates substances of different types from our body. In addition, the smell of sweat can reveal a lot about the emotions experienced by that person.

During several studies conducted over the years, volunteers were asked to sniff sweat samples, collected from people who felt fear and disgust, or who had parachuted for the first time. It may even seem hard to believe, but the truth is that, in the first case, the volunteers accurately identified the emotions of the individuals. In the second, they became nervous and began to react in an exaggerated way, showing greater restlessness, as if they were paratroopers.

2. Long nails are not dangerous just because they are pointed

Currently, many women are betting on false nails. However, in addition to their advantages, they cause a serious inconvenience: bacteria were found in the fingertips of people who use false nails in much greater numbers than in natural nails. One of the reasons for this is the lack of hygiene, because when washing their hands, the person cannot properly clean the space under the nails.

Painted nails, whether false or natural, are also not free from “why”. A few days after applying the enamel, cracks usually appear on the surface of the nail, which become ideal places for the accumulation of dirt.

3. Saliva is more useful than you might think

Saliva facilitates the digestion of food and maintains oral hygiene. Each day, we produce between 0.5 and 1.5 liters of saliva.

The most common reason why people drool while sleeping is the position of the body, facing down. However, salivation can stop completely during the action of anesthesia and decrease when the person is stressed, anxious or depressed. In addition, constant dryness in the mouth can lead to the emergence of various diseases, as well as changes in the perception of flavors and aromas. There are even artificial substitutes for saliva, but none of them exactly mimics its composition, serving only to relieve symptoms.

4. The navel is full of dust and living things

Balls of fabric waste not only show up on your favorite sweater, but also on your belly button. In general, fiber and dust residues accumulate more in overweight men with abdominal hair. This dirt has not yet been studied in depth, but it is believed that it appears because of the hair around the navel, since they end up retaining the residues of the region.

Speaking of the navel, it must be said that it is like a natural reserve for microscopic beings. There are on average 1,400 species of them in this part of our body. Of these, 600 are still unknown to science or have been little studied. And in case someone doesn’t like the shape of their own belly button, there is a surgery designed to give it a new shape. It’s umbilicoplasty.

5. Unpleasant surprises in spices

Our intention here is to inform you about some rather indigestible data involving food. For example, in one gram of ground beef there can be eight insect fragments. One gram of oregano can hide 30 of these fragments. And when that kind of ‘spice’ is added to food, people don’t even suspect.

6. Our comb may be dirtier than it looks

A lot of people don’t even think about the hair that accumulates on the comb, until this dirt starts to make the combing process difficult. A dirty comb or brush has a lot of hair products, dead skin particles and dust. Add to that the humid heat of the bathroom and you have a perfect environment for bacteria and other microorganisms to grow.

With this, a poorly cared for comb can even leave your hair clean looking dirty, reduce the volume and make the strands more brittle. Not to mention that the scalp also suffers, as it appears itching, redness and even dandruff. For all these reasons, it is best to remove the hair strands from the comb right after each use and wash the object once a week.

7. Secrets of Ear Wax

Ear wax was once used as a lip balm and to treat wounds. But today we know that excess wax can make room for the accumulation of harmful substances in the body. Due to a genetic peculiarity, the composition of wax in Asians is different from that present in other peoples: in them, the wax is drier, while in other parts of the world, it is more humid.

Many people believe that the ears should be cleaned frequently, inserting the cotton-tipped swab as deeply as possible. But this can even hurt: the wax is eliminated naturally during the chewing and swallowing processes. And if it is necessary to remove it, it is better to see a doctor for that.

Another curiosity: unlike humans, blue whales do not clean their ears. In these animals, the wax is accumulated, compacted in layers, and hides a lot of information about the individual. These layers of wax can reveal about the whale’s difficult periods and the quality of the water in which it swam. The method resembles the one that lets you know the age of a tree from the rings on its trunk.

8. We produce too much waste

When not processed in some way, the waste we produce ends up being dumped in large sanitary landfills. But it happens all over the world, and if we don’t do something about it, we run the risk of burying the planet under a mountain of garbage.

The leaders in annual solid waste production are China (300 million tons), the United States (228.6 million tons) and India (226.6 million tons). The list of the “dirtiest” countries also includes Germany, Russia, Japan, France, Great Britain, Italy, Canada, etc. The countries with the lowest amount of solid waste are Seychelles (15,700 tonnes per year), São Tomé and Príncipe (16,000 tonnes), Gibraltar (18,000 tonnes). The list of the 20 cleanest countries is mainly made up of island states. In Brazil, production is around 80 million tons per year.

9. Cremating the dead is better for the environment than burying them

And isn’t it that, even after death, we manage to change nature? It is no secret that some countries face the problem of lack of space to bury the dead. Therefore, cremation should become a more common alternative.

The weight of a cremated person’s ashes can vary depending on the person’s age, weight, height and gender. On average, an adult’s ashes weigh about 2.3 kg, according to one study. In certain cases, it is necessary to have a specific authorization to throw ashes in a certain place. Today, it is even possible to throw them into space.

But there’s no reason to worry if someone’s ashes are thrown into a park, the sea or a river, for example. In the crematorium, the temperature exceeds the 750°C mark, eliminating all microorganisms. After cremation, the ashes do not enter into chemical reactions and do not pose any health hazard.
