8 Old Rules The British Royal Family Has Broken

As we have already shown in some posts, the British royal family must follow a series of rules and traditions that relate to the way they dress and behave. This is so that the Crown is not endangered. But do not think that these rules are always respected.

For the women of the royal family, there is a rule that says that they cannot choose the design of engagement and wedding rings, or choose them alone, especially in the case of jewelry accessible to everyone. This rule was first broken by Princess Diana: her famous ring was chosen for her in the house of Garrard. Prince William gave this ring (her mother’s inheritance) as a gift to Kate, who ended up turning it into one of her favorite accessories.

The men of the royal family follow a tradition: Philip, Charles and William do not wear a wedding ring. However, Prince Harry does not do the same. For him, the exchange of rings was not a mere formality and he always wears the ring.

As heads of state (and not government), members of the royal family are obliged to maintain neutrality in all matters relating to political matters, and must not voice their opinions in relation to these matters.

However, in 2005 Prince Charles sent 27 letters to government officials in which he addressed legislation and other political issues, breaking protocol. This caused a series of problems and the press considered the case as a violation of the laws.

In the vows exchanged in the royal family there is a sentence in which the wife claims to obey her husband. Princess Diana, in 1981, refused to say the phrase, which caused a lot of noise. In 2011, Kate Middleton did the same, but public opinion did not consider the act a major scandal. Also in Meghan Markle’s speech there was no word associated with subordination.

When the royal family celebrates Christmas at the Sandringham royal residence, according to protocol no strangers are allowed into the guest room. But the Queen always makes an exception for the head of the dinner. He is invited to join the celebration and the Queen personally pours him a glass of whiskey. Chiefs are said to love this tradition, as it’s the only time they can get a little royal side-by-side.

To avoid the Marilyn Monroe-effect the royal family always recommends that women choose a free cut but with an extra layer of fabric. But Kate loves light dresses, and this has already caused her some problems. A very windy day can force the woman to be holding the dress the whole time, making the photos look very strange.

This rule was first broken by Princess Diana, when pictures of her wearing a bikini appeared on several pages of newspapers. That hasn’t happened to other family members, and Kate and Meghan seem to be wary of that aspect.

However, when Kate was still engaged to William, the rules were not yet applied, so it is possible to find some pictures of her, the prince and friends on a yacht.

Under royal regulations, tights are mandatory at official events. Queen Elizabeth II and Kate Middleton always respect her, but the same does not happen with Meghan Markle. When the weather permits, she wears open shoes and doesn’t like to wear tights.

How to stand still, how to sit and where to place your hands is something that women in the royal family must learn as well. The position of the legs when women sit can only be one: knees together. You can tilt them slightly to the side or cross your heels.

Crossing your legs is prohibited. However, it is very complicated to control these movements, so breaking these rules is easier than we think. The only one who doesn’t make mistakes is the queen, who always sits in the same position.
