According to scientists, seeing is such an important process that it represents 50% of the functionality of the human brain. As we get older, it’s normal for us to feel that our eyesight gets worse, and of course the many hours working in front of a computer don’t help.
But no need to worry, there are some simple exercises that will help soothe tired eyes after a long day at work. We have prepared a series of exercises for eyestrain that you can do anywhere. Check out!
1. Close and distant focus
practice this exercise standing or sitting with a straight back. Place your thumb in front of you, approximately 25.4 centimeters, and look at it for 10 to 15 seconds. Focus on an object that is 3 or 6 meters away and maintain concentration for 10 to 15 seconds. Finally, focus on an object that is far away from you, such as a tree or a building, for another 10 or 15 seconds.
2. Sideways eye movements
Perform this exercise standing or sitting with a straight back. Look to the left without moving your head and focus on an object you can see. Then move your eyes to the right. Do this 5 times and rest. Repeat the process 3 times.
3. Up and down eye movement
Do this exercise standing or sitting with your back straight.
Look up and down and focus on what you see. Do this 5 times and rest. Repeat the exercise 3 times.
4. Diagonal eye movement
Do this exercise standing or sitting with your back straight.
Look down and to the left. Move your eyes diagonally up and to the right. Keep your eyes on stationary objects. Change direction: down and right and up and left. Repeat the exercise 5 times and rest. Repeat the procedure 3 times.
5. Circular eye movement
Practice this exercise standing or sitting with a straight back.
Start rotating your eyes slowly in a clockwise circle. ‘Draw’ 5 circles. Change direction and roll your eyes counterclockwise. ‘Draw’ 5 more circles. Repeat the exercise 3 times.
6. Blink
Blink slowly 10 to 15 times per minute. Do this exercise for 2 minutes.
7. Patting your eyes
The patting exercise is the perfect way to calm the optic nerve.
Sit in a dark room with your elbows on the table. Warm your hands (rubbing together) and place your palms over your eyes. Visualize the dark and breathe deeply. Perform the exercise for 5 minutes.
8. The fiscal year 20/50/20
If you spend the day in front of a computer, take a break every 20 minutes and stare at a distance of 50 cm for 20 seconds. This exercise will give your eyes a regular rest during your workdays.
Bonus: ‘Spa’ for the eyes
You can improve the effect of the exercises by using an eye mask. Here’s an example:
1 tablespoon grated carrot 1 egg white 1 tablespoon aloe vera (aloe)
Mix the ingredients in a container, apply around the eyes and leave on for 15-30 minutes. Then rinse with water.
These exercises have proven to be very effective in soothing tired eyes. If you feel that your eyes are too tired or you notice that your vision is getting worse, be sure to talk to your eye doctor.
