The power of menthol

Among the more than one hundred components that are part of the essential oil of mints – especially piperite, to which the greatest therapeutic importance is attributed – is menthol, a monoterpene alcohol responsible for the characteristic aroma of mints. This substance, colorless and highly aromatic, produces an immediate cooling sensation when applied to the skin or inhaled through the nose.

Menthol has numerous properties. It is used in pharmacies to integrate it into syrups, decongestants, mouthwashes or toothpastes. Drinks, candies, chewing gum and even tobacco are also flavored with it. Finally, it is used in cosmetics and as an ingredient in perfumes, gels, shampoos and insecticides.
