7 causes of redness on the face to watch out for

Redness on the face can be caused by diseases or everyday factors, such as the famous facial blush, a result of shyness. Still, to better explain the issue, see what dermatologists Silvana Coghi, from the São Camilo de São Paulo Hospital Network, and Luann Lobo said:

7 causes of redness on the face that can arise in your daily life

Dr. Silvana and Dr. Luann talked about common illnesses that can have redness in the face as one of the symptoms. Check out the details below:

1. Rosacea

The dermatologist explained that it is an inflammatory skin disease: “It is benign, but, because it is genetic, it is considered chronic, with outbreaks and the return of the polka dots”. Silvana added that “the patients have a red face with small red and yellowish polka dots (papules and pustules), they feel local heat and have several “vases” on the face”.

2. Perioral dermatitis

According to Luann, “there is redness, papules (lumps) and even pustules (small blisters containing pus) in the region around the mouth and nasolabial folds”. He explained that the cause is related to “the indiscriminate application of corticosteroids to the face, excessive cleaning of the skin and the use of abrasive substances”.

3. Seborrheic dermatitis

Silvana commented that the inflammation is more common on the scalp, but it can extend to the face and trunk. “It is characterized by erythema and scaling, especially in the T-zone,” she added. The dermatologist stressed that there is no cure, but “the disease can be treated and controlled”.

4. Atopic dermatitis

According to the dermatologist, it is an “inflammatory skin disease, which can also affect the face, with redness and itching, especially in children with sensitive skin, rhinitis and bronchial asthma”.

5. Psoriasis

Dr Luann commented that the disease is chronic and “can also cause reddened lesions on the face. It usually affects children with the disease more often than adults.

6. Contact dermatitis

Dr. Silvana explained that it is “an inflammation of the skin, with a lot of itching and redness. On the face, it can be caused by many cosmetic substances (makeup, nail polish, jewelry)”.

7. Lupus

Autoimmune inflammatory disease affects internal organs and skin, including the face. “The lesion on the face affects the nasal dorsum and cheeks (butterfly wing), but photosensitivity occurs throughout the skin, especially in areas uncovered by clothing” concluded the dermatologist.

These are the most common causes of disease-related redness on the face, however, people with lighter skin can get a reddened face when they exercise or are embarrassed, called facial flushing, without reason to worry. Japanese descendants and other fair-skinned people may also experience redness soon after drinking alcohol or after being exposed to the sun.

How to safely treat redness on the face

The dermatologist cited the most recommended treatments in each case:

  • Treatment for rosacea: “avoiding alcohol consumption, using sunscreen, washing the face with specific soaps, using oral and topical antimicrobials, in addition to pulsed light, are recommended”, cited Silvana.
  • Treatment for perioral dermatitis: “adequate cleaning of the skin, without exaggeration, drinking more liquids, suspending the use of products on the face and looking for a dermatologist if the redness persists”, commented Luann.
  • Treatment for seborrheic dermatitis: the dermatologist recommended that “wash your face twice a day, use soaps and sebum-regulating gels. And in crises, treatment with corticosteroids and topical immunomodulators can be done, but always with medical advice”.
  • Treatment for atopic dermatitis: “The treatment is done with soothing moisturizers, corticosteroids and topical immunomodulators (pimecrolimus and tacrolimus), in addition to antiallergic and antibiotics, but always with medical advice,” Silvana said.
  • Treatment for psoriasis: “It is essential, daily, to have a routine of basic care, such as adequate cleaning, hydration and sun protection. Having a balanced diet and drinking water correctly throughout the day are also important measures. In addition, looking for a doctor to advise on care for the disease.”, concluded Luann.
  • Treatment for contact dermatitis: according to Silvana, “the treatment involves identifying the cause of the allergy and suspending the use of the allergenic substance, in addition to oral antiallergic and topical corticosteroids”.
  • Treatment for lupus: “as the disease causes inflammation in all organs, treatment should be guided by a rheumatologist. For the skin, it is recommended to use sunscreen and avoid exposing yourself to the sun as much as possible”, concluded the dermatologist.
