5 good reasons not to have a trash can built into your kitchen cupboard

Is your kitchen all planned, with each piece of furniture occupying a millimetrically determined place? Or, do you have a very modern kitchen, with straight lines and light colors?

Perhaps your kitchen is more rustic, in the colonial style. Or, who knows, you’ve decorated your kitchen with retro pieces.

No matter what your kitchen style is, we are sure: in general, trash cans do not contribute to the beauty of the environment and, most likely, you would like to hide it instead of showing it for visitors.

With that in mind, many people opt for built-in trash bins in the closet.

While this is a good aesthetic solution, it does come with some drawbacks that need to be considered. Check out:

1. Bad smell

It’s no use: accumulating food scraps in a closed environment for more than a day will end up giving rise to a very unpleasant smell.

This situation is exacerbated when the bin needs to be left without a lid because of the reduced space in the compartment, contaminating the entire closet.

2. It’s not practical

When the trash can is closed inside a closet, it’s not practical to have to open the door with squishy or wet hands, pull the trash out, open the lid and finally throw the trash into the container.

In addition to the lack of practicality, it is very likely that you will end up dirtying the closet pull or dropping trash around the container, giving even more work.

3. It’s hard to find a trash can that fits in the space

If it seems difficult to find a trash can that matches your kitchen decor, it’s even harder to find one that fits inside your closet.

It will need to be small enough to fit in the closet – and it’s quite possible that because of that, it won’t hold much, filling up sooner than you’d like.

4. You lose space inside the closet

While you gain a few square inches of kitchen space, you lose precious storage space inside your closet.

This means that, in order to build the trash can, you may need to leave the pans out, as you will end up “losing” one of the compartments – and the mess will keep happening.

5. You might forget to take out the trash

“Unseen, unremembered,” goes the old saying. And that goes for the trash can: because it is out of your sight, you may end up forgetting to take out the trash at the right time.

In many condominiums, there is a deadline for the removal of garbage, so that the municipal collection takes everything away as quickly as possible. If you miss the time, you’ll have to wait until the next day.

As you can see, the built-in trash can seems to be the perfect solution for kitchen decor at first glance, but you have to consider that this choice comes with some disadvantages.

If the budget allows, it is worth considering the purchase of a modern and functional trash can, which can be displayed without spoiling the environment and which combines beauty and practicality.
