4+ Hairstyles that can give you a headache

Headaches can be caused by different reasons: stress, high blood pressure, an injury or even changes in the weather. The way you wear your hair can also be a major headache trigger. Some hairstyles that put pressure on the scalp can cause anything from an uncomfortable feeling to severe, constant pain.

We, from awesome.club, we did our research to find out which styles can give you a headache. And be sure to check out the end of the post for additional tips on how to deal with it and which hairstyles are safe. Check out!

1. Ponytail

There are very sensitive nerves under the hair follicles and in the scalp, which can be painful. A ponytail can trigger a feeling of tightness on many nerves at once, which can result in a headache. This condition is quite common and is known as ponytail headache syndrome.

2. Tight headbands or headbands

People who wear headbands or tight headbands may also get a headache. This is considered an external compression headache and can occur when something worn on the head puts continuous pressure on the forehead or scalp. This type of pain is often described as moderate, constant pressure and hurts most in the area where the object presses against the head. If you wear tight caps for a long time, for example, the pain can get worse.

3. Tight braids

4. Hair extensions

Tightly braided hair extensions can give you a nice head of hair, but they can also give you a bad headache. Adding too much weight to the hair creates tension in the head, and excessive pulling on the scalp and hair follicles can make the nerves in the scalp more sensitive. Unlike any other hairstyle, hair extensions are used constantly resulting in continuous pressure on the scalp.

Bonus: How to Get Rid of an External Compression Headache

Gently massage the scalp in the area where you feel pain and take a deep breath. Avoid hair accessories that are unnecessary. Consider hairstyles that don’t put too much pressure on your scalp: a loose bun, a low ponytail or loose braids, or maybe even a shorter bob. Get enough sleep.
