Anyone who thinks that activities for children are just a school role is wrong. Many parents resort to games, games or dynamics to entertain their children and make them spend that accumulated energy without having to leave the house. Read on and find out how to do this!
25 activities for kids
We have prepared a list of great activities for a differentiated family time. With them, you stimulate physical exercise, reasoning, creativity and even empathy. Choose your favorites and have fun with your little ones!
1. Treasure Hunt
Even if you live in an apartment, explore all possibilities to hide items that you want to use as treasure. Produce maps, riddles and challenges in each of the rooms, which must be completed to “pass the level” and gain another clue. Golden tip: with older children, these challenges can be stimuli to fulfill small tasks, such as making the bed and taking out the trash.
2. Find shapes and colors
Great pedagogical stimulus for younger children, this activity consists of making them find geometric shapes and colors in the house. In this way, they will understand that what they learn in school can also appear in real contexts – a window is shaped like a square, a specific fruit is colored red, and so on.
3. Time Capsule
Suggest that the children choose special items that will not be missed in their routine. Write letters for the “family of the future” to read in 5 or 10 years (decide the date between yourselves). Put everything in a box and add whatever else you want. Bury it in a secret place and wait for the years to pass. It will be exciting, we promise!
4. Write a book
If children love reading, how about encouraging them to write their own book? They will be responsible for creating the plot, characters, writing and illustrating the book. Complete job! Perhaps, in this way, you will be giving the world great writers in the future.
5. Produce a movie
First, write the entire script. Then decide who will act and who will record. Finally, film the story you created. Make the most of camera moves, effects, acting and watch the result together. Rule: have fun in the whole process!
6. Floor is lava (the floor is lava)
The rule here is just one: you can’t step on the ground. When the adult shouts “the floor is lava!”, immediately the participants must flee from danger, climbing or hanging on something around. Tip: each round, remove one of the safe havens from the game.
7. Inside or outside?
Place hula hoops on the floor. Say “in” for the child to stay inside the circle and “out” if he should get out of it. Increase the speed, to get more difficult. If the child is already studying English, take the opportunity to train the IN (inside) and OUT (outside). If you don’t have hula hoops at home, make circles with masking tape!
8. Family tree
Do you want to rescue the family’s past and, on the other hand, have a more than special moment with the children? Build a family tree together. If possible, use old photos and tell stories of your children’s grandparents, great-grandparents, or great-grandparents. This activity will contribute to the formation of the identity of the little ones.
9. Build a race track
With masking or colored tape, make a running track on the floor of your house. Competitors can be toy cars, marbles, puppets or paper balls. With that last one, use a straw to blow the balls and see who goes through the home straight first!
10. Test a new recipe
Choose a simple and safe recipe for kids to get their hands on. Fruit popsicles, ice cream, fruit salad, brigadeiro, some cake and cookies are some examples. Still, an adult needs to be around to avoid accidents.
11. Obstacle race
Jumping over the sofa, going under the table, jumping on cushions after rolling up a rug… Go as far as your creativity allows! The race can be done individually with timing to avoid accidents. Finally, whoever finishes the course in the shortest time wins.
12. What does not belong in the group?
It’s a different musical chairs: place the seats in a circle (one less than the number of participants). Someone left out must speak several words from the same group. When something comes up that doesn’t belong to that group, the children should sit down. Example: banana, apple, orange, grape, car, strawberry. When you hear “car”, sit down quickly!
13. What is missing?
Give the kids a minute to observe the space – it could be the living room, the bedroom, the backyard, whatever! Afterwards, they must close their eyes and you will remove an item from the scenario. Upon opening their eyes again, they should say what is missing. Great for working memory!
14. Blind drawing
Game for two participants: one person draws something with their finger on the back of the other, who must reproduce the drawing on a sheet of paper. Will you do the same drawing? The result promises lots of laughs!
15. Deciphering Mysterious Messages
Create code to write emblematic letters. It works like this: each symbol created corresponds to a different letter. Keep a template hanging from the fridge door. Exchange these letters in your daily life to make the routine more fun and mysterious. The child will feel like Sherlock Holmes himself!
16. Figure on the back
Glue figures on the backs of all participants. It can be images of familiar characters, letters, numbers, colors, anything! The rule is one: you can’t let anyone see what’s behind your back. Pure adrenaline!
17. Mission Impossible
Remember the famous scenes of agents walking through corridors filled with laser beams? Your kids can become secret agents if you attach red string to the hallway walls. To make the game more exciting, hang something that makes noise on the wires; that way, everyone will know if the child hit the string… I mean, the lightning!
18. Spider’s Web
Similar to Mission Impossible, but instead of string, use masking tape. The idea is to throw light objects into Dona Aranha’s web and see what sticks. Whoever can pin the most items wins!
19. Paintings
Buy a gouache paint kit and let the child unleash their creativity on a cardboard. If you’re willing, risk paintings on the wall, on the floor, on the backyard wall… Expose the work of art and make the day of little artists even more remarkable!
20. Plant a seedling and take care of it
This is one of the best ways to encourage empathy and affection. Explain to the children that they will be responsible for keeping the plant healthy; they will have to water, take care of sun exposure and prune whatever is necessary. Nurture a meaningful bond between the plant and the little ones. Above all, they will understand the importance of taking care of the environment.
21. Collages with items from nature
Use the fallen leaves from your backyard or building to make a lion’s mane. Use twigs and dried petals to bring a new flower to life on paper. Items that nature discards can make children great artists. Just let your imagination run wild!
22. Storytelling
Make children’s favorite story even more fun! Take care of the scenery, dress up as characters or put on a little theater. Another idea, for older children, is to have a night of horror stories, with tents, dark and some scares. At most, everyone will sleep cuddled afterwards!
23. Giant board game
Create a giant board in the room. The houses are cushions that will be positioned on the floor. Each pillow has a command: go back two spaces, go back to the beginning, advance one space, choose someone to do a funny dance… If possible, make a giant dice out of a cardboard box to make it more fun.
24. Slip on soap
Ideal for those who have a spacious backyard: just spread out a large plastic sheet, wet and drip a little detergent. Keep an eye on the fun so no one gets hurt. It’s so refreshing and fun that even adults will jump on the bandwagon!
25. Explore the backyard
Every child has an Indiana Jones side. So help them explore the backyard of the house or building. Observe plants, insects, possible hiding places… Take the opportunity to talk about the environment, which is always a very important subject.
