21 Events That Happened In “Stranger Things” That Only Those Who Were Not In The Upside Down Saw

Some series end up becoming a fever due to the plot, which draws the public’s attention, with an unprecedented or surprising story. Stranger Things also brought nostalgia to the heart of viewers, as it is set in the 80s and the set design did an excellent job to transport the fan to that magical time.

We, from awesome.club, we love to entertain you. Therefore, we have selected 21 events that have marked the fictional plot so far and that not everyone who watched managed to realize. A fantastic list worth checking out.

1. A villain with a mask and the name Teddy Bear

In the episode The Lost Sister, some members of Kali’s gang appear and one of them is called Funshine, who is the Sun Bear from the Care Bears cartoon, very famous in the 80s. There is another reference in relation to animation: when the group goes out to a mission, Funshine wears the mask of another character in the cartoon, Tenderheart Bear.

2. Halloween costumes influenced by classic 80s movies

There was a Halloween party in the episode Tricks or Treats, Aberration and it brought many references from the 80s. We highlight the couple Nancy and Steve characterized as the protagonists of the movie Risky Business, with Tom Cruise and Rebecca De Mornay. However, if we look closer, we can find a legion of Madonnas, a character from Karate Kid, Wonder Woman and protagonists like Ghostbusters.

3. Stranger Things and Pokémon

Although the Pokémon franchise was created only in the 90s, the similarity of Dustin’s cap, at the beginning of the series, with that of the character Ash is very great. So much so that on the net, some fans also mentioned this similarity in the accessory of the two characters.

4. The Karate Kid phenomenon

“He is so charming, right?”

In the season 3 episode “The Missing Lifeguard”, friends Eleven and Max bring a reference to an idol from the 80s, actor Ralph Macchio, who was the protagonist of the Karate Kid films. The girls find a poster of him in a teen magazine. About this film, there is also a boy dressed as a member of Cobra-Kai at the Halloween party, and Lucas wears a bandana similar to the one Daniel-San wore in the plot.

5. Eleven’s transition reference

In the film Clube dos Cinco, the characters stand out for their costumes that reveal a little of their personalities. In the plot, Claire is the girl in pink who has a delicate and neat look, while Allison resorts to monochromatic colors, which have the “power” to scare and drive people away. We see the same thing in the protagonist of the beginning, who wore a pink Nancy dress highlighting her fragility, in contrast to the more determined and courageous Eleven gothic punk in the 2nd season.

6. The importance of the mirror

Who remembers the hook they left at the end of season 1 when Will appears in a bathroom, a strange animal comes out of his mouth and in the mirror we have a glimpse of the Upside Down? A cinematographic work that also has a similar scene is Twin Peaks. In the 90’s movie, the protagonist, Agent Cooper, breaks the mirror and finds an evil personality inside it.

7. Grigori looks like The Terminator

The antagonist character Grigori, from season 3, is very similar to the cyborg Cyberdyne 101 from the Terminator saga, played by Arnold Schwarzenegger. Their size, their way of walking and their clothes are very similar to the character and they have very similar missions in their respective plots.

8. Eleven and Max enjoying Madonna

In Season 3, Max tries to show Eleven what it’s like to be a normal teenager, introducing her to the mall and all its possibilities. In this episode, the girls delve into what was common for girls in the 80’s and, among other things, experiment with period looks with their bold colors and flashy embellishments. All to the sound of Material Girl by Madonna, music from an album that was released in 1984, but which was successful the following year after the release of the clip.

9. Is Bruce Jack Torrance?

It has a plot scene that also resembled a lot of a famous movie: The Shining (an adaptation of Stephen King’s book). In the inspirational film, Jack Torrance, a character plagued by mental illness, breaks down a door and utters a line as he fits his face into the opening he has made: “Hello, Johnny!” In Stranger Things, the character Bruce chases the crazed couple Jonathan and Nancy, screaming eerily: “Hello!”

10. Seasonal programming on TV

11. Arcade games

In the 1st episode of the 2nd season, the characters were in a game room talking, and the production again put on a show in building the environment of the 80’s. In one scene, we see the boys playing in a machine characteristic of the decade, which clearly showed the logo of a game that was fever at the time: Dragon’s Lair (Dragon’s Lair), created by Don Bluth and Rick Dyer.

12. Brands as in It, the Thing

In the episode Dig Dug, the characters Nancy and Jonathan show their scars on the palms of their hands, which the two did in Season 1, precisely to get the Demogorgon’s attention. The marks resemble the ones the characters made, as part of a pact, at the end of It: The Thing, they were also part of a brave group made up of children.

13. A Possible Homage to Winona’s Career

In the plot, the fans perceived a simple homage to the filmography of the actress who plays Joyce, Will’s mother. They found the tombstone of Beetlejuice, the main character of the 1988 film Ghosts Have Fun. This film had Winona Ryder as Lydia, a teenager who has to deal with the ghosts of the new house.

14. Inspired by the works of Steven Spielberg

In the episode Will, the Wise, from season 2, the protagonist sees the monster when he opens the door of his house and we see the wall full of drawings he made, to explain the visions he was having. It’s very similar to the scene we saw in Steven Spielberg’s film, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, from 1977. The one who opens the door to see the extraterrestrials is Barry Guiler, a little boy of just 3 years old.

15. The history of New Coke

In the mid-80s, the Coca-Cola company decided to circumvent the advance of a competing brand and launched a new formula for its soda. Such as series takes place at that time, the drink appeared several times in the plot. The brand said at the time that it would relaunch this new flavor with the series logo on its packaging.

16. The style of Magnum PI

17. More 80’s Movies

Another film that had a simple reference was Jaws, from 1975; they copied a lot of stuff from Officer Brody to compose Sheriff Hopper. For starters, the two own a Chevrolet K5 Blazer named after the city police department, they are the same color and model. The duo’s uniform is also similar in color and in the triangular symbol that the two wear on the left arm sleeve.

18. The fashion of the heartthrobs of the time

In the 80s, what made the heads of the famous, and not so famous, was the mullet cut and it arrived with everything in the Stranger Things character, Billy, Max’s older brother. The character bears an unmistakable resemblance to another Billy, played by Rob Lowe, in the film The First Year of the Rest of Our Lives in both rebellious personality and physicality.

19. A fairytale classic

In the 5th episode of the 2nd season, Eleven/Jane meets her mother Terry and her aunt Becky in the house where she lived before being kidnapped and turned into an “experiment”. In the bedroom, hanging near the door, we can see a black and white illustration of the White Rabbit from Alice in Wonderland.

20. The use of electrodes in experiments

When they begin to tell Eleven’s story in season 1, it is shown how their powers are tested and, at one point, they use several electrodes on their head in Hawkins’ laboratory. This part is very similar to the movie Flames of Vengeance, starring Drew Barrymore, which tells the story of Charlie, a girl who is also studied because of her pyrokinetic powers.

21. A real number for fans to enjoy

A supporting character that was very useful in seasons 2 and 3 was Murray Bauman, as he helped police officer Hopper and scientist Alexei communicate. However, most fans remember that in one scene, Bauman’s number is shown and, lo and behold, it’s a real phone. The CNET website stated that the number 618-625-8313 works and it is possible to hear a message from an answering machine with the character’s voice.
