20 National flowers from different countries and some curious facts about them

There are many national symbols that mark the identity of each country. Mexico’s, for example, is a golden eagle; the United States, on the other hand, has the emblem of its nation in the bald eagle. But there are many other symbols that define the wealth of a country, among them flowers. In addition to being beautiful, they usually represent important characteristics of the culture of different countries.

O awesome.club did a research and today will show you 20 national flowers belonging to 21 countries and some curious data about each one of them.

1. Virgo Orchid (Honduras)

The virgin orchid grows in Central America and has been declared the national flower of Honduras because it represents vigor, beauty and distinction. Originally, this orchid was not the national flower of that country; however, in 1969 they chose it because the previous national flower, the rose, was not a native plant of the country.

2. Ceibo (Argentina and Uruguay)

Uruguay and Argentina have the same national flower: ceibo. Argentina declared it a national flower in 1943 and Uruguay in 1942. The flower grows on a tree of the same name, which is also the Uruguayan national tree, but not Argentina.

3. Pink (United States)

In 1986, President Ronald Reagan declared the rose the country’s national symbol. The rose has different characteristics depending on the region and it is estimated that there are more than one hundred species worldwide.

The ipe is a well-known tree in South America and it also has different varieties. The yellow ipê lives in open formations in the Atlantic Forest, has beautiful flowers and is widely used in landscaping for its rapid growth. Another symbol of Brazil is the pau-brasil, also called pau-de-pernambuco.

Chuquiragua is often found on small shrubs in the Andean region and is the national flower of Ecuador. Also known as the walker’s flower or the flower of the Andes, it has medicinal properties that help improve the body’s defenses, intestinal and liver function.

THE mayo flower is a native and endemic orchid of Venezuela and was declared its national flower in 1951. The name comes from the habit of decorating a crucifix to commemorate the mayo cross🇧🇷 It is highly appreciated as an ornamental flower and is used to decorate balconies between March and August.

Chaconia is the national flower of Trinidad and Tobago. They are born in a small tree and curiously bloom in the period in which the independence of the islands is celebrated, on August 31st.

The Bayahibe rose is the national flower of the Dominican Republic and it is so called because it grows in a region that bears the same name. This delicate flower does not grow on a tree, but on a cactus with few leaves that grows only in this country.

The Colombian orchid, also known as the flower of May or lily of May, was declared a national symbol in 1936. The designation came after a request from the Argentine National Academy of History, which that year organized an exhibition of flowers representing each country on the American continent. .

Known as cantuta or cantu, it is the national flower of Peru and one of the symbolic flowers of Bolivia. For the Incas, it was a sacred flower that represented life, especially with regard to the conservation of water and humidity.

Mburucuyá is a woody vine and its name derives from the Tupi language. The flower produces an edible fruit with medicinal powers. The Guarani used it mainly for its analgesic properties. Its fruits have many seeds and therefore are consumed by many mammals and birds.

The dahlia has been the Mexican national flower since 1963, but its beauty has been dazzling many people for much longer. His name in Nahuatl is atlcotlixchitl, which could be translated as “water tube flower”. She was also known among the Aztecs as xicama-xochitlwhich means “camote flower” because of its tuberous roots.

Copihue has been Chile’s national symbol since 1977. There is a Mapuche legend that tells the tragic love story between Copih and Hues, who belonged to enemy tribes. The flower’s name is a combination of the initials of the names of the two tribes: copihue.

The carnation grows in the Iberian Peninsula and is the Spanish national flower. It is known for its relaxing properties, so it can be used in infusions to reduce stress or even as a muscle relaxant.

19. Flower of the Holy Spirit (Panama)
