20 movie scenes that marked a before and after in cinema history

Cinema is a fundamental part of many people’s lives. He teaches about love, friendship, conquest and defeat. But some movie scenes are so special that they stay registered in our memory for a long time. They mark a before and after in the history of cinema because they bring a completely innovative scenario, a simply brilliant interpretation, a wonderful soundtrack or simply because they tell a story with which we all identify.

1. The rocket on the moon in Trip to the moon (1902)

The world of cinema owes a lot to George Méliès. In 1902 he presented a very innovative narrative and special effects for the time and not only turned his film into the first worldwide success but also into the first science fiction film in history. The scene in which the capsule, launched by a giant cannon, reaches the moon so that the territory can be explored has become one of the most classic images in cinema.

2. The scenography of Singing in the Rain (1952)

A man in love who says goodbye to his great love with a kiss and is so happy that he doesn’t care about the rain. Drenched, he sings”I’m singin’ in the rain, just singin’ in the rain” (I’m singing in the rain, just singing in the rain) and transforms the musical sequence into one of the most iconic in cinema. A scene that curiously was not foreseen in the original script.

3. The spaghetti scene in The Lady and the Tramp (1955)

The scene, a hallmark of the film, was nearly cut by Walt Disney, who thought it wasn’t romantic enough and would be too silly. However, animator Frank Thomas disagreed and decided to go ahead. When Walt Disney saw the result, he was impressed and decided to keep it in the final version, luckily for all of us.

Don Vito Corleone, patriarch of an Italian mafia family, shows his full power in the very first scene of the film, while his daughter’s wedding takes place in the garden. He appears sitting petting his cat when an old acquaintance walks in to ask for a favor. The scene was fundamental to mark the personality of the character and the style of everything that was to happen in what is considered one of the greatest films in the history of cinema.

6. “Are you talking to me?” in Taxi Driver — Taxi Driver (1976)

In the original scene in English, the character Travis, played impressively by actor Robert De Niro, looks in the mirror and says “You talkin’ to me?” (Are you talking to me?), a phrase that was ranked tenth on the “List of the 100 best movie phrases of all time”, according to the American Film Institute (American Film Institute).

7. Sandy and Danny in Grease — In the Brilliant Times (1978)

Because it’s a musical film, Grease — In the Brilliant Times has many songs and dance sequences, but one of the favorites of critics and audiences is “You’re the one that I want” (You Are The One I Want), in which Sandy and Danny, played by Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta, get together and celebrate by dancing.

8. “I am your father” in Star Wars, Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back (1980)

The drama of discovering that your biggest enemy is also your father was the icing on the cake in what is also considered one of the greatest classics in movie history. We all feel the same frustration as Luke Skywalker with that line that changed the course of the plot.

9. “Here’s Johnny!” in The illuminated (1980)

The film adaptation of Stephen King’s eponymous book shows us how Jack Torrance loses his mind and attacks his wife, locked in the bathroom, with an axe. It is impossible not to die of fear and distress with the impressive performance of actor Jack Nicholson.

11. The speech and death of replicant Roy in Blade Runner (1982)

A plot that takes place in a dystopian future and brings the confrontation between humans and replicants (name given to humanoids, artificially manufactured humans that are closer to human clones than robots). The most impactful moment of the film is the memorable speech of the replicant Roy: “I have seen things that you could never imagine (…) All these moments will be lost in time, like the tears in the rain”.

12. The Crane Strike in Karate Kid — The Moment of Truth (1984)

In the final match against Johnny Lawrence, Daniel Larusso is badly injured and decides to use the crane technique (a jumping front kick) to attack his opponent. It is with this blow that Daniel becomes champion, earning not only the respect of his enemies but the admiration of his master, Mr. Miyagi.

13. The Vase Scene in Ghost across the life (nineteen ninety)

No one knows what happens to the ceramic vase that Demi Moore was making when Patrick Swayze decides to hug her, but what we do know is that the scene is one of the most remembered in the movie and one of the sexiest in film history. Of course, the moment wouldn’t be the same without the song “Unchained Melody”, performed by the duo The Righteous Brothers.

The film has very beautiful and moving scenes. But the most memorable moment is when Rafiki introduces Simba to the other animals in the kingdom to the sound of “The Endless Cycle”. A classic Disney scene that has been parodied on many occasions.

15. “Run, Forrest, run!” in Forrest Gump — The Storyteller (1994)

16. “I am the king of the world!” in Titanic (1997)

One of the most remembered scenes in the film features Leonardo DiCaprio at the bow of the ship. It’s interesting because it works as a kind of counterpoint to the scene where he meets Rose, in the back of the ship. James Cameron, the film’s director, echoed the character’s line, “I’m the king of the world!” when he won the Academy Award for Best Director.

17. “I see dead people” in The sixth Sense (1999)

How to respond to a child who says he sees dead people? The scene in which actor Haley Joel Osment says this phrase left the world completely surprised. It’s the big reveal of this suspenseful classic.

18. When Neo dodges bullets in Matrix (1999)

The film Matrix gave the world memorable action sequences that marked a before and after in the world of visual effects. Several scenes show the effect bullet time (or “bullet time”), which consists of freezing the action while the camera continues to move. One of the most iconic is when Neo dodges bullets, leaning his body back and forming a right angle with his legs.

19. The talent show in Mean Girls (2004)

The most memorable scene in the film is the talent show. The innocent Cady (played by Lindsay Lohan) joins the group known as The Powers to perform a choreography themed “Jingle Bell Rock”. The scene is captured on video by Regina George’s proud mother (played by Rachel McAdams) and when everything seems to go wrong, Cady decides to improvise and save the party.

20. Darcy’s statement in Pride and Prejudice (2005)

“Miss Elizabeth, I have been struggling in vain and I cannot bear it any longer, these past months have been a torment.” This is how the romantic declaration under Mr. Darcy to Elizabeth in the film adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, story written by Jane Austen.
