Inspiration

Tie dye (which can be translated as “tying and dyeing”) was quite popular during the 1960s and 1970s, at the height of the tie dye movement. hippie🇧🇷 At that time, artists such as singer Janis Joplin were responsible for popularizing this dyeing technique, which creates different color patterns on the fabric through tying.

Currently, tie dye has received a makeover and has become perfect for people who are in tune with fashion, who adopt the streetwear🇧🇷 The technique combines perfectly with comfortable pieces, which is why it dominated the wardrobe of fashionistas who value versatility.

Time to get your hands dirty!

Applying the dyeing technique at home is not a big deal. There are several types of tie dye prints, and the final result will depend on the type of tie and the colors used in the fabric.

Before venturing into this world, know that the homemade technique only works in natural fabrics, like cotton. In addition to wear gloves, to avoid allergies and skin damage, it is necessary to line the workplace with old papers (such as brochures or newspapers) to keep the space clean.

It is also worth mentioning that, after applying the dyes, it is necessary to wait for the paint to dry and wash the fabric before using it. Messages given, now let’s get our hands dirty!

circular print

To create this effect, trace a rounded line on the shirt (as shown in the first image) with a washable pen. You can use a string or a shoelace as a kind of compass, to make tracing easier.

Then make a kind of “accordion” in the fabric based on the line already marked. Use string or yarn to divide the shirt into five parts (as pictured below).

Wet the fabric and use different shades of dye for each part. Then just wait for the paint to dry and voila🇧🇷

To perform this technique, you need to tie stones to a white t-shirt with the help of rubber bands. Then apply two types of dyes to create your print (as in photo 2). Only remove the elastics when the garment is completely dry.

First, crumple up a wet white T-shirt and place it in a drying rack. Then cover the piece with ice and pour two shades of dye into the mixture. Wait for the ice to melt and the paint to dry.

Colorful spiral on black t-shirts

Colorful spiral on white t-shirts

To create the spiral effect on white t-shirts, use the same technique of rolling it up with the help of a fork and dividing it into six parts with the help of rubber bands.

Instead of using bleach, you just need to soak the piece in normal water and apply the color tones you want. The result is also the best!

Spiral in “burnt” style on black t-shirts

This t-shirt uses the same technique as the two previous topics to create the “spiral” effect. Only this time, it was divided into four parts and only bleach was used to discolor some parts of the shirt. Although the step by step is similar, the end result was very different, do you agree?

heart print

What a cute heart! To reproduce this pattern, you need to — first — create a heart-shaped pattern in half.

Divide the shirt in half and make a mark using the heart pattern (you can use a washable pen, for example). Then make a kind of “accordion” in the fabric, on the line that was marked. Tie an elastic band on top of the marking and another just below.

Wet the shirt with water and use two different colors to dye it. Pour the dyes in the areas delimited by the rubber bands (as shown in the image above). Finally, wait for it to dry, remove the rubber bands and you’re done!

“V” print

Lengthwise, divide the shirt in half twice. Use a washable pen to draw a line that resembles a Christmas tree (as in figure 1). Make an “accordion” in the fabric using the strokes as a reference base and attach an elastic band over each of the lines.

Then apply a shade of dye to the region near the elastics and apply another shade to the rest of the shirt. Wait for it to dry and you’re done!

Water Drop

Fold a shirt, inside out, in half and, with a washable pen, trace two circular lines (as in figure 1). Then make an “accordion” with the fabric, using the larger circular line as a base.

Over the longer line, secure the fabric with a string. Then, use the washable pen to divide the fabric into several equal parts (the number of parts will depend on the size of your shirt).

Then, you must secure each of these parts with a string. The important thing is that the result of this process looks, more or less, like the one in the figure above.

Apply two shades of dyes of your choice to the fabric, interspersing them. After the ink dries and the fabric is washed, your t-shirt is ready to wear.
