Bonus: In the past, it was possible to climb the Rostral Columns in St Petersburg

In the late 1980s, the Rostral Columns were still open, so people used to climb them all the time. But there was a negative point: the stairs were not lit, and as they are very narrow, visitors had to go up with their backs pressed against the wall so as not to bump into each other. There was a veritable flow of people going up and down the stairs simultaneously. As cell phones did not exist at that time, lighters were often used to light the floor. People could barely get past each other. The view from the top was simply incredible. But during school holidays, everything got even worse: the stairs turned into a real public toilet. It’s a good thing they ended up closing the doors of the monuments a while later.. © ldlu / Pikabu
