17 Actors Who Haven’t Won an Oscar Yet and Possible Reasons

There are still more than two months until the most important event in the film industry, the annual Oscar ceremony. However, film critics have already started making lists of the first candidates. Of course, almost all Hollywood stars dream of receiving the coveted award. At the same time, there are several particularly “lucky” actors who are nominated for Oscars year after year, but in the end, the award is given to others. We wonder what are the possible causes of a situation like this.

At the awesome.club we try to find the answer to that question. In our opinion, there are several reasons. Naturally, we do not claim to own the absolute truth, these are just our observations and assumptions.

First of all, this has a lot to do with the actors themselves. Some of them remained pigeonholed into a single character, others refused to attend all necessary events and gave endless interviews, and there are those who are simply unlucky.

Second, in recent times there has been a steady downward trend in the popularity of the ceremony among film fans. Last year, the Oscars lost 29% of the audience, mostly young people between 18 and 34 years old. That is, the ceremony is increasingly becoming something of a tussle between academics who choose the best films and actors not because of their popularity but for political reasons. An added twist to what is happening is the fact that each year the American media publishes material that reveals that many Academy members do not see the nominated films or watch them without attention and without understanding the context.

We’ve rounded up 17 talented actors and actresses who have been nominated a few times but for various reasons never received the top award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

1. Amy Adams

Amy Adams has been nominated for an Oscar 5 times, including the movies Doubt🇧🇷 The master and Cheating🇧🇷 In 2016, she had a big role in Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi movie The arrival🇧🇷 However, for film critics this character of Adams went unnoticed, which caused a wave of indignation among fans of the actress.

Perhaps the reason for her bad luck lies in the fact that Amy Adams began to conquer Hollywood rather late, at the age of 25. At this age, many stars have already been nominated for Oscars, as it is Hollywood custom to start their careers at a very young age.

2. Bradley Cooper

The actor was nominated for an Oscar for 3 consecutive years. The first time was in 2013 for the main male role in the film The good side of lifebut the statuette was given to Daniel Day-Lewis by the film lincoln🇧🇷 The following year, Bradley was nominated as a supporting actor for the film Cheating, but in the end who took the Oscar was Jared Leto. For your role in American sniper, Bradley Cooper was nominated for a third time, but was defeated by Eddie Redmaine, who played Stephen Hawking.

Assessing Cooper’s situation, it appears that his finest hour has yet to come. However, in the next edition the actor can leave the ceremony with his reward. your project A Star Is Born has maximum probability of success: in this case he is the director, producer, screenwriter and actor. So let’s hope this time Bradley Cooper is lucky and gets the coveted statuette.

3. Saoirse Ronan

Despite her age (she is 24 years old), Saoirse Ronan has already been nominated for the most prestigious award three times. The first, at age 13 for her role in the film Desire and Repair🇧🇷 Later she was included in the list of candidates for her role in the film brooklynand last year, almost won the award for the lead role in the film Lady Bird — A Time to Fly🇧🇷

Saoirse Ronan is an example of how to start conquering Olympus from an early age. However, youth has already played a cruel joke with her several times: the actress was nominated for an Oscar along with such heavyweights as Frances McDormand and Meryl Streep. But Ronan did not feel discriminated against and declared that she did not want to compete last year and that the nomination itself was a victory. By the way, this time Saoirse can receive the award for the role of Mary Stuart in the film two queens🇧🇷

4. Joaquin Phoenix

Joaquin Phoenix can boast three nominations: as a supporting actor in Gladiator and for two main roles in the projects Johnny & June and The master🇧🇷 It is strange that, for his brilliant work in the films Is it over there and Inherent Vicehas not been nominated by film academics.

Rumor has it that the actor simply doesn’t intend to do the extra work just to get the payoff: namely, showing up to all the necessary events and giving endless interviews.

5. Helena Bonham Carter

The muse and star of Tim Burton’s films was about to take the Oscar twice. The first in 1998 in the category “Best female role” in the film Wings of Love🇧🇷 The second time, already in 2011, she was nominated for best supporting actress in the biographical drama The king’s speech🇧🇷 But on both occasions the actress was unlucky. It should be noted that the brilliant role of the psychopath Marla, from Fight Clubwas also not rewarded with the prize.

The actress is unlucky not only with the Oscar: she received seven nominations for the Golden Globe and not a single victory. Is it perhaps because, for conservative members of the academy, the image of Helena Bonham Carter is too scandalous?

In the long career of Johnny Depp, there are 3 Oscar nominations. And, in 2008, he was nominated for his portrayal of the lead role in the musical Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street and this time lost to Daniel Day-Lewis.

In general, Depp honestly claims that he is not interested in receiving awards. After the premiere of the film Crime Alliance, for which he received positive reviews from European and American critics, Johnny, who played the protagonist, gave an interview in which he stated that he did not need an Oscar. According to the actor, he acts in films not for awards, but for the love of people.

7. Sharon Stone

During her career, Sharon Stone has starred in more than 40 films, but she gained universal fame, of course, after her big role in Wild instinct🇧🇷 By the way, this film was not even nominated for an Oscar. Stone was nominated by the film academy only once, for her role in Casinobut on that occasion the award was given to Susan Sarandon.

Unfortunately, Stone’s star career also started too late at the age of 34. Before that, she worked as a model and settled for second-rate roles in low-budget action movies. Failing to win the love of American critics, Stone decided to move to Europe. She is credited with making the Cannes Film Festival one of the most popular and influential film events in the world. In the 1990s, Sharon Stone became the protagonist and inspiration of a charity night organized during the festival.

8. Bill Murray

The first and only Oscar nomination for the idol of millions was in 2004 as best actor in the film Meetings and Disagreements🇧🇷 However, he was defeated by Sean Penn. Surprisingly, despite starring in cult films like Time Spell and The ghost hunters🇧🇷
Bill Murray was never rewarded by film critics.

In an interview, the actor admitted that at some point he decided not to participate in the race for the awards. Murray compared the thirst to win an Oscar to a virus and considered that this competition has a negative effect on the winner’s way of thinking. According to him, actors suffer from the “Post Oscar syndrome”: they stop making films that don’t have the potential of the award and, many times, make the wrong decisions.

It’s hard to believe, but Keanu Reeves was never even nominated for an Oscar. He gained his fame in the early 2000s, when the trilogy matrix it was launched. 10. Tom Cruise

Tom Cruise received his first Best Actor nomination in 1990 for his role in the film Born on the 4th of July, but lost to Daniel Day-Lewis. The second time, he was nominated for the statuette after 7 years, when he participated in Jerry Maguire — The Big Turn, but in the end the Oscar went to Geoffrey Rush. Cruise competed for the award for the third time with the film Magnolia, in the supporting actor category.

Cruise’s situation can be explained by the “successive Pitt-Hanks” hypothesis, according to which there are two types of actors in Hollywood: some look like Brad Pitt and others look like Tom Hanks. The first type can show excellent performance for years, but never receive an award for doing so. At the same time, “Hanks” type actors can easily win a prize for the first successful work. Let’s say, you can’t argue with science. It remains to be hoped that Cruise has everything ahead, because Leonardo Di Caprio has waited for more than 20 years for his moment of glory.

11. Jessica Chastain

Success came to Chastain after the film’s premiere. Cross Stories, in which she was immediately nominated for an Oscar in the category “Best Supporting Actress”. Fortunately, her career is currently at its peak, so Jessica has every chance of success.
