We surround ourselves every day with a large number of people. When interacting with them, we notice certain characteristics of their character and behavior patterns. Have you ever wondered why some people behave in a very strange way and others, on the contrary, show a dignified personality? All this has a psychological explanation.
O awesome.club examined some psychological terms in detail and tried to explain their meaning in simpler words.
1. Alexithymia
Its textual translation of the Greek term means: “without words for feelings”. In short, it is a state in which a person cannot verbally express the emotions he experiences.
2. Authenticity
If a person is able to express and say exactly what he feels and thinks, he can be considered authentic. In other words, it is the coherence between feelings, words, gestures and facial expressions.
3. Allocation
This term is defined as the manifestation of some kind of feeling or mood in an exaggerated way. Such behavior is characterized by an excess of presumptuous language, unnatural and arrogant gestures.
4. Rigidity
Rigidity is defined as the inability of a person to change their habits and customs, even when doing so favors the situation. For example, rigid people refuse to change their point of view, even when they discover new facts that prove them wrong.
5. Hypercompensation
It refers to the personal desire to correct physical and mental deficiencies that may be real or fictitious. At the same time, the resources invested in combating imperfection are considerably greater than those necessary for a person in such conditions.
6. Conformism
Under the influence of one or more people or society in general, a person tends to change his initial opinion or behavior. That’s compliance.
7. Perception
This is the state in which a person unexpectedly finds the solution to his problems. The main feature is precisely a sudden inspiration. So someone, walking away from analyzing the situation, reflecting and doing other things, unexpectedly discovers how to solve the problem.
8. Locus of control
Under this term it is understood that the attribution of successes and failures in life is caused by external factors (external locus of control) or own capabilities (internal locus of control). Thus, a person attributes everything to other people’s circumstances or to himself.
9. Catharsis
It is the effect that arises after experiencing certain feelings that results in emotional relief and causes tension to disappear. Basically, it’s spiritual relief after an emotional outburst. For example, a person suffered, became angry for some reason, and after crying, that which was negative disappeared, the desire to forgive appeared. This is catharsis.

12. Forer Effect
Also known as the Barnum effect. The idea is that a person tends to regard obscure and abridged descriptions as completely reliable and referring specifically to him. A clear example: those who believe in horoscopes.
13. Phubbing
New, but perhaps one of the most frequent phenomena of modern society. Phubbing is the abuse of electronic devices that manifests itself in constant distraction during a conversation with an interlocutor.
14. Pygmalion effect
This phenomenon is based on two principles. The first is that people on a subconscious level behave as would be expected of them. The second is characterized when a person is certain of something, and explains it in such a way that it affirms his conviction.
For example, a general management that considers employees to be lazy, incapable and initially determined to achieve negative results. As a result, get precisely such subordinates.
15. Autarchy
A state in which a person feels an inner satisfaction and sufficiency.
16. Assertiveness
A very important characteristic in the modern world that implies a trustworthy and dignified conduct when defending your own interests without harming the rights of other people. For example, a person is offered telephone service that he does not need. A response with insults or profanity will be incorrect: “Leave me alone, I don’t have time!” The correct form: “Thanks for the proposal, but I don’t need it.”
