We often take for granted the fact that our favorite artist is called a certain way, or else we don’t pay attention to the last name of the famous person. Only, in several cases, the name of celebrities can surprise fans. Behind the name of most celebrities there is a whole lot of work, as the artistic name needs to be strong and easily remembered. In certain cases, shortening the name or changing one letter is sufficient. In others, childhood nicknames or names chosen to honor other people are highlighted.
O awesome.club thought it would be interesting to find out the real names of some celebrities and understand the reasons why they decided to adopt their respective stage names.
1. Jamie Foxx-Eric Marlon Bishop
In the late 1980s, the then-girlfriend of the now star challenged Foxx to perform at a comedy club and tell jokes. Realizing that women were called to the stage first, he decided to change his name to Jamie Foxx, as it was ambiguous enough to allow him to be called first. At the same time, that name didn’t sound strange. He chose the last name in honor of comedian Redd Foxx.
2. J Balvin — José Álvaro Osorio Balvin
When looking for a stage name, one of the singer’s rapper friends suggested he use the name of a hot sauce called Scotch Bonnet. However, later on, he decided that J Balvin would be easier to pronounce, both in English and Spanish. The name is the combination of the initial of his first name, José, added to his maternal surname.
3. Elton John — Reginald Kenneth Dwight
When he began to be recognized in his hometown for his peculiar taste in music, he joined the band Bluesology. The saxophonist was Elton Deán, and the vocalist was called John Baldry. Later, the star had the idea of merging both and coming up with a good stage name. Thus, Elton John was born.
4. Marc Anthony — Marco Antonio Muñiz
Marc’s father was a big fan of music and an admirer of Marco Antonio Muñiz Vega, a well-known bolero singer. When the son was born, the man named the boy after his idol. Afterwards, Marc started to work with music and had to change his name so as not to be confused.
5. John Legend — John Roger Stephens
When the singer signed to Kanye West’s record label, he heard from poet J. Ivy that his music had an old-timey feel that reminded him of the great legends of the past. So much so that he automatically started calling the singer Jhon Legend (legend is “legend” in English). Right away, everyone started to call the artist that way and, although at first he wasn’t very convinced about it, the famous ended up officially adopting the nickname as his stage name.
6. Luis Fonsi — Luis Alfonso Rodríguez
When he started in the world of music, in the late 90s and early 2000s, he thought it best to change his name. Encouraged to sing professionally, he saw his career take off under the name we all know today: Luis Fonsi.
7. Nicole Richie — Nicole Camille Escobedo
Nicole was adopted at age 3 by Lionel Richie and Brenda Harvey, who were great friends with the actress’ biological parents. When she was 9 years old, the adoption process came to an end. That’s when she legally ceased to be called Nicole Escobedo and made room for the “birth” of Nicole Richie.
8. Ricky Martin — Enrique Martín Morales
Ricky went through an uncomfortable moment when he was still part of the Menudo group. He was called Kiki or Quique, short for Enrique. But when he arrived in countries in Asia, he learned that, there, the term is used to refer to the female genital organ. And the world-renowned star didn’t want to be known like that anywhere. After this experience, he adopted the name Ricky Martin.
9. Miley Cyrus — Destiny Hope Cyrus
Her parents, Billy Ray Cyrus and Tish Cyrus, named her Destiny Hope (in Portuguese, Destino Esperança) because they believed from the bottom of their hearts that the girl would achieve great goals. But when they saw that the baby was so smiley, they nicknamed her Miley, short for smiley (“smiling”, in Portuguese). This, after all, ended up becoming the stage name of the singer and actress.
10. Maluma — Juan Luis Londono Arias
Famous Colombian singer Maluma changed his birth name to use a combination of the names of his closest relatives. His mother is called Marlli Arias, while his father is Luis Londoño and his older sister Manuela. By adding the first syllable of each one, the star arrived at the name Maluma.
11. Natalie Portman — Granddaughter-Lee Hershlag
The Israeli actress adopted the stage name in honor of her paternal grandmother. Apparently, this was her grandmother’s last name before her marriage and, to remind her, the actress decided to use that same maiden name.
12. Karol G — Carolina Giraldo Navarro
When signing her first contract, the singer began to wonder what her stage name should be. She was sure of one thing: it needed to be something close to her real name. One person mentioned the name Karol G to her, making it clear that he was a fan of the rap group G-Unit. But despite having found her stage name right away, she spent a year referring to herself as “Karol G Now”, a name that today makes the artist a little embarrassed.
13. Brad Pitt — William Bradley Pitt
The actor decided to pursue his own dreams by dropping out of school in the US state of Missouri and moving to Hollywood without a second thought. He changed his name thinking of giving it a more elegant touch. The star abandoned his birth name, shortened his first last name and adopted Brad Pitt as his stage name.
14. Miguel Bosé — Luis Miguel González Bosé
The singer is known by the most dedicated fans and relatives by three different names. He was registered as Luis Miguel González Bosé, but later decided to drop his first name and change one of his last names, changing his name to Miguel Dominguín Bose. Finally, he reversed the last names, starting to sign Miguel Bosé Dominguín.
15. Tina Fey — Elizabeth Stamatina Fey
Tina’s name is the diminutive of her middle name: Stamatina. This turned out to be the actress’s choice, in combination with her baptismal surname, Fey.
16. Kit Harington — Christopher Catesby Harington
Kit is short for Christopher. The actor preferred to be called that, given that his given name, Christopher Catesby, seemed too elegant. Furthermore, his brother also has the same middle name. He almost adopted the stage name Kit Catesby, but thought he would end up gaining an air of a 50s TV presenter.
