16 Celebrities who immortalized their presence at events with their iconic costumes

Many of the looks that celebrities create for the red carpet become truly iconic and remain in fashion history and in the memory of fans for a long time. Some celebrities simply shock the public with the originality of their clothes, while others wear unconventional costumes that hide a curious story behind them.

We, from awesome.clubwe decided to recall the occasions when striking celebrity looks became the main theme of the event.

Lizzy Gardiner

Australian costume designer Lizzy Gardiner shocked audiences when she attended the 1995 Oscars in a dress made entirely from gold American Express credit cards. All cards were genuine but expired. Her appearance in such a bold outfit became one of the main topics on the red carpet, but for some of those present, such an act did not cause pleasure, but discomfort.

In an interview, Lizzy noted that the dress was very controversial for its time, and many women felt uncomfortable and angry that she didn’t take everything so seriously. The stylist also said that she chose such an extravagant outfit simply because she was broke at the time and had nothing to wear.

Princess Diana

In 1996, Princess Diana attended the famous Met Gala, just three months after her divorce from Prince Charles. At the time, her look was one of the most memorable. According to witnesses, all attention was focused on Diana and she became the real queen of the night. Lady Di appeared at the event in a navy blue Dior silk dress. Her choice was debated for several reasons.

First of all, it was one of the first outfits that designer John Galliano created for Dior. And, of course, such publicity only brought him advantages. Secondly, for that time, the choice of such a candid dress, reminiscent of underwear in style, was quite daring. Diana was even afraid of the reaction of her son, Prince William, who at the time was 14 years old. To complement the look, the princess wore a choker made from a brooch, given to her by the queen on her wedding day.

Celine Dion

Today, Céline Dion is rightfully considered one of the modern fashion icons: she is not afraid to be daring and regularly delights her fans with new looks. However, she demonstrated a rebellious style in the ’90s. Just look at her Oscar outfit in 1999, which was ahead of her time in many ways. At the time, the singer wore a white suit, whose blazer was worn backwards.

Céline later commented on her choice as follows: “All the women wore dresses to events, not pants. I was the only one wearing pants and a blazer backwards. If I dressed like this today, it would be considered normal. But at the time it was avant-garde.”

Elle MacPherson

In 2005, the model went to the Met Gala in a long lime green Calvin Klein gown, and her look became one of the most memorable looks of that night. The fact is that the star hid a little secret in her look: she wore comfortable flats, as the sandals were not visible under the long dress.

In addition, the model is 1.83 m tall, so heels were not needed. Of course, such a violation of traditional protocol could not but cause a backlash, but Elle herself loved her look.

Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga is the true queen of sensationalism. However, in 2010, she outdid herself and wore a dress made from pieces of meat. This unusual outfit was created by designer Franc Fernandez for the MTV VMAs. However, this was not just a fashion provocation, but a serious human rights gesture from the singer. As a result, Time magazine named the “meat dress” the top 2010 Fashion Statement. Fernandez later said the dress would be conserved and placed in the singer’s clothing collection.

Elle Fanning

At the 2017 Cannes Film Festival, Elle Fanning wowed audiences in her luxurious strapless gown by Vivienne Westwood. The costume dates back to the salon culture of the 17th-18th centuries. What caught the public’s attention, however, was the unusual print on the long tail with a unicorn, a shooting star named Elle, a heart and a planet, all hand-painted.

Apparently, the unicorn was Elle’s idea and is a reference to Vivienne’s dresses from her spring 2005 collection. Ten people worked on creating the costume, and it took more than 300 hours to complete by hand.

Sarah Jessica Parker

The headpiece was a nativity scene, with incredible details and rich decorations.

kim kardashian

Kim Kardashian showed up to the 2021 Met Gala in a black Balenciaga ensemble that covered every inch of her body, including her face. According to reports, in this way the star wanted to create a new subculture and make a fashion statement with her outfit: “There’s no logo, no face, but everyone knows it’s Kim.”

Cardi B

In 2019, singer Cardi B shocked the public with her luxurious feather dress by designer Tom Brown. 35 people worked 2,000 hours to make this grandiose suit. The length of the tail was 3 m, and it took five men to carry it up the stairs.

30,000 feathers were used in the dress and her bodice was adorned with real rubies worth $250,000.

Grimes

Canadian singer Grimes never misses an opportunity to shock fans, so everyone was waiting for her epic appearance at the Met Gala. And, truth be told, it did not disappoint. She appeared in the image of a battle elf armed with a sword. The futuristic silver costume was decorated with beads and her face was hidden under a chrome mask. According to the singer, the movie Dune inspired her to create such a look.

However, elven earrings deserve special attention. The fact is that by placing them at such an important event, Grimes glorified designer Sofia Pavlova, who has been making jewelry for a long time, but only gained worldwide fame after the last Met Gala.

Miley Cyrus

When Miley Cyrus gets ready for any event, her fashion choices are pretty predictable: it has to be something bright, extravagant and eccentric. Her appearance at the MTV Video Music Awards was no exception. The singer opted for a pink latex mini dress with balloons in the shape of the words Do It attached to it: a reference to the title of one of her songs. Fortunately, the balloons survived the ceremony and didn’t burst at the crucial moment.

kim petras

It seemed that after appearing at the MTV VMAs in a strange mask, the German singer could no longer surprise her fans. However, she soon arrived at the Met Gala in an even more extravagant outfit, complemented by an enormous horse’s head. Kim Petras also wore a long braided ponytail. During an interview, the star said that in this way she wanted to represent “all the human girls and horses present at the event”, whatever that means. The singer also noted that it took two weeks for the costume to be prepared.

Gemma Chan

Any Oscar ceremony is distinguished by a huge number of extravagant and ostentatious costumes. In 2019, Gemma Chan’s voluminous pink dress became a real triumph on the red carpet. By the way, one of the stylists wittily noted that the outfit was somewhat reminiscent of a parachute. This dress first appeared on the catwalk during the Valentino brand’s winter show, and the show was so beautiful that it even made many guests cry. And as you’d expect, Gemma and her stylist decided to hurry up and chose this look for the event.

One of the memorable details of the dress was the pockets, which Gemma made sure to show the photographers.

Tilda Swinton

It’s no secret that this British actress knows how to show up effectively on the red carpet and her outfits often become the subject of discussion. The 2020 Venice Film Festival was no exception: Tilda appeared before the audience holding a luxurious mask that looked more like a work of art than a mere accessory.

It was made especially for Tilda by James Merry, who is also known for his long-term partnership with singer Björk. James was inspired by stingray skeletons, seaweed, orchids and sculptures that adorn the Rialto fish market in Venice.

Meghan Markle

In 2017, Prince Harry and his beloved Meghan Markle announced their engagement. The actress appeared before reporters in an elegant white coat with a wide belt. However, all eyes were on her heels, which were clearly too big for her. This unusual choice of Megan is still remembered by many.

Sarah Jessica Parker

In 2013, the theme of the Met Gala was “Punk: From Chaos to Haute Couture”. The event was especially memorable for Sarah Jessica Parker’s costume design. The actress accessorized the handmade dress with an enormous mohawk, so big that she had to sit on the floor of her car on the way to the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Guests at the event were impressed with the actress’s outfit. Jennifer Lawrence couldn’t even resist and went to Parker to touch the mohawk.

Which costume, in your opinion, is the most memorable?
