Job interviews are always a lottery, after all we almost never really know what interviewers are looking for in candidates. However, whether by luck or creativity, some people always manage to choose the best words and phrases and end up being hired on the spot.

With that in mind, the awesome.club sorted out a few stories of people who said the right thing in the interview and were hired right away.

I was asked, “Are you going to become the new star of the company?” To which I replied: “No, I want to be the moon, there are already too many stars”. Another question: “Why do you want to be the moon? The stars have their own light, while the moon only reflects light.”

After thinking for a while, I replied: “The light emitted by the stars is useless, neither during the day nor during the night. The moon at least reflects sunlight at night, when we need it.” The interviewer smiled. Science saved my day and I was hired. Anonymous / Quora

A company selected 20 students for a round of interviews and intended to hire just two. Interviewer: “What would you do if a company with the same profile and with better conditions offered you a job?” I replied, “I would.” And the interviewer continued: “That means you are not loyal to us. Even if I offer you the job, there is no guarantee that you will stay with us. In that sense, why should I hire you?” To which I replied, “Sir, if you find another candidate better than me, you will offer him the job. So, following your logic, your company is not loyal to me. Everyone wants the best for themselves. You want the best people to work for you and I want to work for the best. Don’t you think you’re the best in the industry?”

The company’s HR department asked me to teach a writing course. When I walked in to discuss course details, I came across five executives who decided to interview me. They wanted the team to go from being unable to write basic sentences to writing ten-page engineering reports after just 40 hours of coursework. I know some teachers would agree to do the impossible to get the job. I do not. Said she wasn’t the teacher they needed. I mentioned that I didn’t want the job, which surprised them. But they decided I was perfect for the job anyway, because I told the truth. Verneita Boonlom / Quora

Manager: “Almost 3 months have passed since the last year of college and I’m sure that many companies came to the university looking for candidates. Why weren’t you hired by any company?” I replied, “Most of the companies that came to our college had a ‘grade point average’ and ‘fail history’ prerequisite. As I failed math once in my second year of engineering, I couldn’t apply.” The manager asked, “So you never bothered to apply for any vacancies at these companies?” And I replied: “I think companies that don’t respect my failure don’t deserve me”. Silence. After a while, the manager smiled at me and said, “I like your answer.” End result: I got the job! Nikhil P Kulkarni / Quora

Interviewer: “OK, so we’re done with the technical part. Would you like to tell me something else about yourself?” I replied, “If you were an HR interviewer, I would have said a lot of things, but since you’re not, I wouldn’t want to say any more about myself.” The expression on his face was priceless. Maybe I should have been scared. He then said, “I have an HR column for you to say something about yourself.” I said, “No, I don’t want to share anything yet.” The interview ended about three or four minutes later. I was called to the next phase, which was actually with HR. But nothing about the incident was commented on. I was hired. Akriti More / Quora

When I was 14, I wanted to work at a real estate development company. The manager said I was too young, but I said I had been working since I was 11, on a work permit, and I showed him the article in my local paper, The Reston Sun-Times, to prove it. He said, “This here is a computer store. We are much more sophisticated. This article proves nothing.” And I said, “This proves that I am able to give, second by second,
to the fatal minute all the value and brilliance”. He looked stunned and asked, “What did you say?!” And I said, “It’s from a poem by Rudyard Kipling.” I recited the poem “If” from memory. He was quiet for a while and so was I. Until I said, “OK, I loved all of this. I’m going to change company policy and we’re going to hire him.” Alex Lightman / Quora

The CEO asked me, “How would you handle a job that required you to work six days a week, ten hours a day?” Everyone in the company held their breath. I was looking for a job and I did a lot of tests and a lot of interviews at a company. But everyone always said the same thing: “We need someone with experience”. Until I couldn’t take it anymore, I got up, slammed both hands on the table and said, “How can I have experience if no one hires me?” I turned and went to the door. At that moment, the interviewer said, “Come to work on Monday at 8:00”. I thanked and left. I worked there for five years. Sandra Taylor / Quora

I was interviewing for a director position and the company was known for asking really tough questions. I was the last candidate of the day, it was late, and I noticed that the interviewers were tired. At one point, someone asked a question about my CV. I replied, he didn’t like my answer and started to argue. It was at that moment that I started laughing and made a joke about myself.
