15 Inconsistencies And Continuation Errors In Harry Potter That Almost No One Has Noticed In 20 Years

Even a great franchise like the “Harry Potter” saga is not free of inconsistencies and continuity errors. Some mistakes were made by the author herself, such as, for example, the gaffe associated with the Time-Turner, which many fans consider the most unfortunate invention of the magical world. But a large part of the “holes” in the plot emerged from the films, which sometimes focused more on the visual effect of the show than on the harmony between the facts of the story.

We, from awesome.club, we were honestly surprised that we had never noticed such errors before. Don’t worry, we’ll share our findings with you: or did you notice? In the bonus, you’ll finally find out what Neville forgot in the red remembrall scene. Follow!

Why are Hogwarts’ safety rules so weird?

The heroes of the saga have said many times over the years that Hogwarts was the safest place in the entire wizarding world. Really… after all, students only play dangerous sports, participate in deadly competitions and fight monsters and black magic.

But when it comes to visiting a harmless village, the rules are stricter than ever: no one can go to Hogsmeade without parental or guardian permission. But why, then, is adult consent not required for children to participate in, for example, the Triwizard Tournament? That would at least be logical.

Why does Harry go to wizarding school a month before the school year starts?

Few people noticed this temporal inconsistency in the first film. Hagrid takes Harry away from the Dursleys on the boy’s birthday, i.e. the 31st of July. The two then head to Diagon Alley, where Hagrid buys Harry an owl as a present for his 11th birthday. That means it was still the same day. Soon after, the guard hands the train ticket to the boy, who finds the platform ¾ with Ron’s help and they both go to Hogwarts. But the day remained the same, July 31st.

In the book there is no such inconsistency: after Hagrid’s visit and shopping in Diagon Alley, Harry returns to the Dursleys’ for another month before going to Hogwarts.

Why doesn’t Harry see the Thestrals after killing Quirrell?

One of the big oversights of continuity, which is totally unfortunate, is when they show Quirrell’s death. First, Harry deliberately kills his teacher, who crumbles to ash in front of him. If we ignore the moral aspect that an 11-year-old boy has just committed premeditated murder, there are still many questions left. For example, why didn’t Harry see the Thestrals after Quirrell’s death, as he can only see the magical creatures who witnessed the death? Again, the events described in the book do not create the same illogical situation: Harry does not kill Quirrell, but just fights him and then loses consciousness and does not see the exact moment of the professor’s death.

How did the teachers know that Basilisk had taken exactly Ginny?

When the teachers see the inscription on the wall: “Her skeleton will forever remain in the Chamber”, they immediately inform them that the monster has kidnapped Ginny Weasley. But so far they hadn’t done any verification of the students and there wasn’t any further information on the wall either. So how did the teachers find out that it was Ginny who was in the Chamber?

Why did Lucius Malfoy take Dobby to Hogwarts?

House-elves are like a family asset, they must serve the place they are part of and cannot leave there without the authorization of their owners. It is evident that in this scene, Malfoy ordered Dobby to go to the castle with him, but why? Apparently, just for Harry to release him.

Why aren’t competitors who failed one of the challenges removed from the Triwizard Tournament?

The tournament rules weren’t very godly. If a given competitor failed in one of the challenges, he could not continue in the next ones. But when Fleur Delacour of the Beauxbatons Academy failed in the second challenge, she continued in the tournament. If so, then some competitor could simply not participate in the first few challenges and just start late in the last one, the maze. Furthermore, all competitors had the same obstacles.

How does the Portal do Cálice work?

Normally, after using the Portal, it would lose its teleportation properties and would no longer have functionality. In the 4th book, the author mentions that after wizards reached the Quidditch World Cup, the portals sent them to a special box of used portals.

Why didn’t the Goblet of Fire stop being a portal after transporting the boys to the cemetery? Why does he take Harry and Cedric back but not into the maze but out of it? And why, shortly thereafter, does he lose his duties? In one of the following scenes, it can be clearly seen how Cornelius Fudge takes the Goblet in his hands. It would be funny if the Minister was transported to Voldemort’s side.

Why is the home of the Black family, who are proud to be pure-bloods, located in a Muggle neighborhood of London?

How could Dumbledore not guess that Voldemort had created Horcruxes?

The movie “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” was not very happy in representing the moment when the heroes (Dumbledore and Harry) find out about the horcruxes. Dumbledore said the following sentence: “I could never imagine this”. But he had already seen the horcruxes diary and definitely knew what they were for.

In the book there is no such inconsistency: the most important information that Dumbledore discovers in the pensive is not the fact that Voldemort had created horcruxes, but the number of them, which makes much more sense.

Why was it Pettigrew, and not Dumbledore or James himself, become the secret keeper of the Potter household?

According to the saga books, we know that only the owner can become the secret keeper of his own home. For example, Arthur Weasley was the keeper of Burrow and Shell Cottage, respectively. Why, then, wasn’t the secret keeper of Potter’s house James, Lily or Dumbledore himself, who would certainly not reveal the address to Voldemort?

According to one theory, this was set up by Dumbledore himself. He specifically advised the Potters to make Pettigrew their guardian, knowing that he would betray his friends, who would die at Voldemort’s hands. But that would begin the defeat of Voldemort himself.

How were James and Sirius wearing their Gryffindor uniforms?

In one scene, right after the hat selection ceremony, Lily was sitting at the table between Sirius and James. She wore the classic wizarding school uniform, but the boys wore the uniforms with the Gryffindor ties and crests. But they were still freshmen and had just been sorted into the houses they would be part of. Therefore, they had not yet received their respective uniforms.

Why were Lily and James murdered by a “noseless” Voldemot?

The movie “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II” shows that, by killing Harry’s parents, Voldemort arrives in Godric’s Hollow already in his noseless form. In fact, he only got that way after being reborn, but at the time of the Potters’ deaths he should still have had a nose.

Why did Harry feel Umbridge’s locket only in the audience room?

When Harry and Hermione, disguised as Ministry officials, met in court, Potter said he could feel the locket, which was hanging around Umbridge’s neck. But the characters had just gone down the elevator together and were even closer to each other. Why didn’t Harry feel the locket while still in the elevator and steal it right there, thus avoiding doing that whole scene in front of everyone?

Why don’t the characters have the same eye color?

Immediately after the release of the first film, fans repeatedly complained about the color of Harry Potter’s eyes — Daniel Radcliffe has blue eyes, not green, as it should be. Because once the spectators accepted this small divergence, the directors decided to film a child actress with brown eyes, playing the role of little Lily, who should have had blue eyes. How, after that, to justify the fact that Harry had his mother’s eyes?

By the way, if that were the case, Tom Felton also has blue eyes and could have played the character of Harry with possibly the same success, if only he had dyed his hair.

Where did the “London Eye” ferris wheel come from in the movie?

In one of the scenes of the eighth film, you can see the London Ferris wheel known as the “London Eye”. It’s quite a famous attraction, but most Britons know that it only opened in 2000. And the events of the eighth film, as you know, took place in 1997.

Angry fans further noted some of these inconsistencies. For example, during the sixth film, there was still no such bridge that was later destroyed by Voldemort, among other structures. There are also continuity errors with car brands, for example.

Bonus № 1: Graphic errors

We couldn’t help but mention the graphic image errors. In the first film, when Oliver Wood is showing Harry the smallest of the Quidditch balls, he is looking everywhere but at the Golden Snitch. In the fourth film, the Patil twins seem not to have decided which of the two would have the spider walking around their body. When the spider image is in the hand of the girl on the left, her sister moves her hands as if she is trying to get rid of something “imaginary”.

The most attentive spectators certainly noticed that, in certain scenes, it was the stuntmen who were performing. The first film shows Hagrid and Ron in this way. In the third film, in the scene with Boggart, we can see Daniel Radcliffe’s stunt double.

And here we can notice another error related to the Time-Turner. In the same scene where the heroes are worried twice, the vase breaks differently.

Bonus № 2: What did Neville forget?

Unlike the book, the movie explained exactly what Neville had forgotten when his Remembrall turned red. In this image we can see that all the students are sitting at the table in full uniform and only Neville is not wearing a cape. Here is the answer that many readers have been looking for in the book “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone”.
