15+ Facts About “Supernatural” That Even The Biggest Fan Might Have Missed

Supernatural is in the minds and hearts of lovers of stories that mix suspense and terror, with a light touch of humor. The plot had 15 seasons and ended at the end of 2020, but fans lived so long enjoying the hunter duo that they became practically family. Therefore, remembering each part of history is bringing up one of the best series of all time.

1. 80’s Horror Movie Protagonists

In the episode The Usual Suspects, Sam and Dean are arrested by a policewoman who is played by Linda Denise Blair, the actress who played Regan in the movie The Exorcist. At the end of the episode, Dean still makes a joke asking for pea soup, referring to an unforgettable part of the film. In the Encounter in Samarra chapter, Robert Englund, protagonist of the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise, played Dr. Robert, an unlicensed physician.

The duo goes to a comic book store and a more attentive fan was able to clearly identify behind Sam a poster for the movie House of Wax, which he starred in 2005 with Paris Hilton. The feature was not very successful and took a note of 5.4 on IMDb, but it was one of Jared Padalecki’s first works.

3. Chuck is the creator

In the episode The Monster at the End of the Book, a writer named Chuck appears, and he wrote books about the adventures of the duo. In his narratives, he is included as the character of God, precisely because he created the series, but later we will understand that he is really God. Chuck is a pseudonym, and his name is Carver Edlund which is the combination of the names of two writers of the series in real life: Jeremy Carver and Ben Edlund.

A fan’s dream would be to be able to call the Winchesters, right? Amazingly, right at the beginning of the series, this was actually possible. The plot’s producers set up a recording for anyone who dialed the number 1-866-907-3235. Callers could hear the following message: “This is Dean Winchester. If it’s an emergency, leave a message. If you are calling 11-2-83, call me with your coordinates.”

6. Commemorative numbers in the series

To celebrate the airing of 100 episodes — Caminho Sem Volta — and after 200 episodes — Fan Fiction -, the series’ producers left tips that signaled this mark. On both occasions, the number of hotel apartments where the duo stayed had, respectively, the numbers corresponding to the episodes. The plot was broadcast for 15 years and had a total of 327 episodes broadcast.

7. References in fictional characters’ names

In order not to be identified, the pair of hunters acquired fictitious names to present themselves as investigators, FBI agents, doctors, policemen and so on. The inspirations are the most diverse, from homage to someone on the team, to movie characters and famous artists:

Hamil and Ford — Star Wars Mark Hamill and Harrison Ford; Stark and Banner — Marvel Characters; Bonham, Jones, Plant and Page — Led Zeppelin Band: Spears and Aguilera — Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera; Mulder and Scully — The X-Files ;Simmons and Frehley — Gene Simmons and Ace Frehley of the band Kiss;Coach Roth — David Lee Roth of the band Van Halen.

8. A Supernatural band

In the episode Last Call, the band that plays at Swayze’s Bar is real, its name is The Impalas, and it is formed by some members of the team from the series. In the plot, its name is adapted to The Texas Impalas, its musicians are Tracy Dunlop, Cam Beck, Perry Battista, Chris Glynn Jones and Dave Webb. Jensen also has a band that even released an album entitled Radio Company Vol. 1.

10. The various scenes with the “Starburst Clock”

Those who watched the series must have noticed the recurrence of some decoration items, and this clock in the shape of a sun is one of them and the production named it Starburst Clock. Some theorize that it’s just an inside joke by the series’ team, but he actually appeared in several plot scenarios: hotels, houses, cafeterias and restaurants.

In the episode What’s Up, Tiger Mom? from the eighth season, Sam and Dean participate in an auction of the god Pluto and in it some magical objects were for sale. At the end of the plot, our dear Sam wields Mjolnir, the hammer of the superhero Thor, a true god in the series. The artifact was used again in the 15th season, in the episode Último Feriado.

In the series, many of the actors’ relatives were extras: actor Alan Ackles, Jensen’s father, appeared with his son in an episode of the eighth season, called Mágoa. His sister, Mackenzie Ackles, also appeared in episodes of the second and seventh seasons. Danneel Ackles and Genevieve Cortese, wives of the protagonists, have also been part of the plot as Sister Jo and Ruby’s second “shell”, respectively.

13. Reporters from a real newspaper

In the season two episode Bloodlust, the hunters pretended to be reporters for a newspaper called the Weekly World News. The name was inspired by a real newspaper, which had publications about supernatural and fictional facts, which was published for almost 30 years and today has a digital version. The tabloid still appeared again in the fifth and seventh seasons.

14. Castiel’s outfit has a reference

Eric Kripke didn’t hide where his inspiration came from when dressing the angel Castiel; he said it was deliberate to wear the khaki overcoat, white shirt and dark tie. Kripke thought of an outfit similar to that of the DC Comics character John Constantine and the Constantine series.

Filming for the plot took place in Vancouver, Canada; we highlight as an example an episode of the first season, in which the team filmed on Lake Manitoc, and the story talked about children who disappeared. Those who were more attentive remembered that this place also appeared in other films and series such as: iZombie, Psych — Special Agents, The X-Files, Stargate SG-1, Smallville: The Adventures of Superboy, The 4400 and Gangs of the Night.

In the Season 5 episode Switching Channels, the pair of hunters goes to a parallel universe where they are characters from TV shows like: Big Three and Grey’s Anatomy. All thanks to the participation of Loki, the Norse god of trickery or prankster, also known in the plot as archangel Gabriel.

In the episode No Chess, from the second season, Sam and Dean were arrested and the chapter was very reminiscent of a famous series also starring two brothers: Prison Break. Another link that the show made to a cinematographic work was in the episode LARP and the Real Girl, in which a type of game called Moondoor takes place, in which the participants dress in clothes from the medieval era. In one scene, Dean is seen stepping out into the fight, dressed and painted similarly to the main character in the film Braveheart.

Incredible as it may seem, this famous series started on a modest budget. In the original script, Dean Winchester was supposed to be a man with a body full of tattoos, to compose the character, but they chose not to. In the plot, the hero has only one tattoo for protection, which is an infinite pentagram (first photo), which was done throughout the show.
