15 Amazing Sculptures That Will Leave You With Your Mouth Open

Modern sculpture goes beyond incorporating objects in stone, metal or other materials. This form of art also resorts to metaphorical language to help in communication between the sculptor and the public, stimulating reflections on the most diverse subjects, ranging from philosophical questions to the debate on the consequences of climate change.

1. A sculpture participating in the Venice Biennale and signed by Lorenzo Quinn shows dramatic and expressive hands, coming out of the Grand Canal and holding a building. The idea was to convey the feeling that Venice is about to sink under the waters. The work was intended to draw attention to climate change.

2. Another work by Lorenzo Quinn was called “The Force of Nature”, a series of sculptures that defy gravity, using a woman to represent Mother Nature. She made circles using the world we live in

3. “Les Voyageurs”, or “The Travelers”, by Bruno Catalano, is a series of non-bronze sculptures, made in life size. The figures lack body parts, as if they are slowly falling apart.

4. “Anonymous Passengers”, by Jerzy Kalina, is an incredible set of sculptures comprising 14 pieces. They were positioned in the city of Wroclaw, Poland. The center of the work is occupied by the figure of a woman, who is surrounded by her family members. It’s like some of them are being sucked into the ground.

5. “The Unknown Officer”, also called “The Unknown Bureaucrat”, by Magnus Tomasson, is an extraordinary and truly eye-catching work of art. It is located in Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland.

6. Called “The heart of the trees”, the series of sculptures signed by Jaume Plensa can be seen in several cities around the world. The bronze figures embrace the trees with their arms and legs. Isn’t this a great example of surrealism?

8. This huge sculpture is called “Walking”, and was created by Wei Wang for the sculpture festival held on the seafront at Bondi Beach, Australia

9. The sculpture in the shape of a large spider was named “Maman”. Made by Louise Bourgeois in bronze, marble and stainless steel, it is in the Guggenheim Museum, in Bilbao, Spain

10. “Looking Up”, a 10 meter high stainless steel sculpture by Tom Friedman, is located in Austin, Texas. It is a great example of monumental contemporary art.

11. Little, realistic sculpture depicting a giant thumb sticking out of the ground, was created by César Baldaccini and installed in Paris, France. Can you imagine such a sculpture, 12 meters high and weighing over 18 tons?

12. “Karma”, by Korean artist Do Ho Suh, is an impressive sculpture formed by male figures resting on their shoulders and covering each other’s eyes. This huge “human staircase” is located in the American city of New Orleans

14. “Decrease and Ascend” is a sculpture in Bondi, Australia, created by David McCracken. when viewed from a certain angle, it looks like an infinite ladder reaching to heaven

15. Made of metal, this monumental sculpture is located in Havana, Cuba, and was created by Rafael San Juan. It exalts the power of women. The beauty and sensuality of this masterpiece were inspired by Cuban dancers
