14 Revelations From Sociopaths That Might Put All Your Friends In Doubt

The hallmark of a sociopath is a complete disregard for the rights and feelings of others. Contrary to what we usually imagine, people with this type of disorder do not run away from society and do not hide in dark apartments, but live among us. According to studies, at least one in 25 people suffer from this problem, and many do not realize they have it.

O awesome.club investigated this phenomenon in depth. We carefully studied a book whose author was diagnosed with sociopathy, and to understand the problem a little better, we sought the word of medical experts.

It hasn’t been long since sociopathy and psychopathy started to become synonymous terms. In place of these two words, the expression “antisocial personality disorder” is used today. To facilitate understanding and following the author of the aforementioned book, we will use the old term “sociopathy”.

Scientific opinion: the same Martha Stout asserts, in her book, that sociopaths have absolutely no internal restrictions, and that these people act relying only on cold rationalization. Generally, they do so in order to obtain some kind of benefit for themselves. Nor are they capable of empathy, but they can usually fake it very well, copying the behavior patterns of mentally healthy people.

“Sociopaths raised in middle- and upper-class families often turn into leaders”

According to the book by Dr. Robert Hare, a person with a sociopathic disorder has 4 times more likely to become a company manager than to end up as a salesperson or employee.

Scientific opinion: These words were confirmed thanks to Robert Hare’s famous electrical discharge experiment. In the same scientific test, sociopaths and healthy people were subjected to light discharges of electrical current with a timer that counted the seconds before each discharge. Normal people experienced increasing nervousness as the moment of shock approached. Sociopaths, on the other hand, showed no anxiety.

The lack of reaction to negative events can be explained by the high dopamine content in the brains of sociopaths. This hormone is responsible for reward and motivation. That is, the desire to win or to achieve something is so high that they forget about the consequences.

“In the fiction film Blade Runner, there is a kind of being analogous to sociopaths, the replicants. They look so much like flesh-and-blood people that they can only be identified through an extensive psychological questionnaire with questions that make the subject express emotions.”

Scientific opinion: The diagnosis of this disorder is really difficult. Few people with symptoms of lack of remorse go to a psychiatrist. Generally, to get a diagnosis, a questionnaire compiled by Dr. hare.

Detecting sociopathy requires great care. Let’s be honest: would you go to a doctor if you simply felt the inability to experience empathy and acted like a complete egoist? Does this look like a symptom of a disorder? Your answers were probably “no”. This is why this problem is often so difficult to detect.
