14 Objects and Animals That Can Hurt Your Toddler

Every day thousands of children suffer accidental injuries caused by falls, poisoning, suffocation or burns. These incidents often happen within the home, because no matter how hard parents try to create a safe environment, it is very difficult to prevent all possible harm. In addition, it is not always possible to recognize a threat in something that has been part of your daily life for several years.

Especially for concerned parents, the awesome.club developed a list of the most common threats to a child’s health and life, which, although they may not always seem obvious, are very real.

The idea is not to exhaust the subject, but to help remind parents that objects that are not always obvious can pose risks to the little ones.

Check out our list:

1. Indoor plants

Pots with flowers are usually placed in a conspicuous place, so nothing prevents the child from trying to taste a flower or leaf. Unfortunately, the consequences can be very sad. For example, poisonous azalea leaves can cause toxic shock and dieffenbachia (also known as With Me Nobody Can🇧🇷, which is often grown indoors, causes swelling of the larynx. To avoid these problems, get rid of all potentially dangerous plants.

2. Protection to cover the plugs

Protections to cover plugs are nothing new. But conventional ones are not so difficult to remove. In addition, some of them are colorful and tend to attract children’s attention. Therefore, opt for padlock-type protectors or, better yet, cover all exits with furniture, which is much safer. And if you plan to carry out large-scale renovations in your home, then it is worth providing for self-closing outlets.

3. Pillows and crib protectors

4. Slippery bathtub

Some children’s bathtubs, and even bathroom floors, can be slippery and cause a potentially fatal fall for your little one. In the case of bathtubs, there is also the risk of drowning smaller babies. To prevent slipping, place a rubber mat on the bottom of the bathtub or on the shower floor; this will reduce the chance of slippage.

You can also place a special cover over the faucet to mitigate a possible impact, while, on the wall next to the bathtub, you can place bars to help the 3 to 4 year old child to hold on to get out of the water.

5. Far corners

Chances are, when hiding in a trunk with a heavy lid or a narrow pantry full of boxes, a small child won’t be able to get out on their own and will get quite a fright. Keep these types of places locked up, and then wherever the child goes around the house, you’ll find him quickly.

6. Garbage cans

Trash, like all colorful things, sometimes attracts the attention of little ones. So that the child does not take anything from the trash can and does not put in his mouth something that could cause food poisoning (for example, a spoiled candy or a bottle of household chemicals), cover the can with a heavy lid and, if possible, hide it, at least, in the cupboard under the sink.

7. Handrail

8. Cables

Giving up electronic devices these days seems impossible, but hiding your cables is a more than real necessity. It is always better to hide, for example, extension cords, in a case that you can buy or make yourself using a shoebox. Some cables can be fixed under the tables, others can be attached to the walls using special brackets. Another safe way is to fix the cables with an adhesive tape, covering them directly on the floor.

9. Slippery floor

Slippery floors and holes in a rug can also cause a very traumatic fall for a child running around the house at high speed. If there is such a risk, put patches on the carpet and, in extreme cases, cover the holes with furniture or remove the carpet completely. Treat the floor with a special product, which will take only 10-15 minutes. In the bathroom, put a rubber mat.

10. Drawers

To prevent the child from reaching the contents of the chest of drawers or falling into a heavy drawer, a special type of blocker was invented a long time ago. Magnetic and sliding locks, velcro or simply fasteners will protect your child’s valuables and the child from possible injuries. It costs less than 50 reais and guarantees your peace of mind.

11. Pets

Even the cutest and cutest animals can pose risks; therefore your children’s pets should be examined by a veterinarian, vaccinated and well trained. When choosing a friend, be it a dog or a cat, pay as much attention as possible: choose animals of ‘friendly’ breeds. Make sure the child doesn’t try the pet’s food in the bowl and doesn’t go into the pet’s house. Teach little ones to treat their pets with respect so they won’t react aggressively.

12. Plastic bags

Parents sometimes forget to hide their children’s ordinary plastic bags, an issue that is quite important: a curious child may become interested in an object that makes attractive sounds and may try to chew it or put it on his head. Be sure to store them in a place that is inaccessible to the child.

13. Gas stove, sink and pans

To exclude any kind of dangerous parts, such as gas stove knobs, place covers to block them, preventing them from turning. And if you install a faucet with a thermostat on the sink, setting the temperature limit, then the child will not get burned from too hot water. With regard to pans, it is always good that the handles are not within reach of the little ones.

14. Decorative elements

Heavy vases, figurines and glass frames can fall on children while artificial fruit and scented candles end up being swallowed by them. To avoid these problems, remove from the house (or the child’s reach) everything that can be put in the mouth, as well as fragile and unstable objects. For example, a picture frame can be hung on the wall, while heavy figurines can be temporarily replaced with light objects.

And don’t forget: although there are many different ways to protect a child from domestic accidents, teaching safety rules is no less important than hiding sharp and dangerous objects.

And what do you do to ensure the safety of the little ones at home?
