14 Animals We Used To Fear But Aren’t So Dangerous

The animal kingdom is full of species that seem extremely scary but are actually quite harmless. Some of these creatures are frightening for their size, while others have sharp teeth or fangs. But the truth is that these animals have more to fear from humans than the other way around.

Don’t be fooled by appearances. O awesome.club wants to show you 14 seemingly dangerous animals that are completely harmless. Check out!

1. Basking Shark

Seeing this shark’s open mouth approaching may seem like a nightmare, but there’s nothing to worry about. Unlike other carnivorous shark species, basking or peregrine sharks feed on plankton, small fish and invertebrates. Their enormous size puts them in second place for the biggest fish on the planet. They can measure more than 12 m and weigh up to five tons.

2. Giant African Millipede

Giant African millipedes can reach up to 30 cm in length, live from five to seven years and have 300 to 400 legs. This strange creature lives in forests and feeds on organic matter from trees, logs or decaying plants. Unlike centipedes, which have fangs and are venomous, millipedes do not bite and their secretions to defend themselves against predators are mostly harmless to humans.

3. False coral

The false coral is considered dangerous because it looks a lot like one of the most venomous snakes in nature, the coral snake. Both have a pattern of red, yellow and black stripes, but one is completely harmless to humans, while the other is actually quite dangerous.

4. porcupine

5. Manta ray

This species of stingray (Mobula birostris), the largest in the world, can measure up to 7 m in width. Despite their size and strange appearance, manta rays do not have a stinger, so divers have nothing to fear. These animals feed on small prey and plankton.

6. Vulture

Vultures can appear intimidating for their featherless heads, large wings, and habit of only appearing when there is a corpse nearby. But these birds of prey are harmless to humans. They usually feed on dead animals, as their claws are short and more adapted for walking than for killing. But when food becomes scarce, they hunt for live prey.

7. Whale Shark

The whale shark is the largest fish in the world and can measure up to 12 m in length. Like the basking shark, this species feeds on plankton, algae, small fish and crustaceans. These marine giants do not attack humans. They tend to be very affectionate and playful with divers; there are even reports, although without confirmation, that they come to the surface exposing their belly to receive caresses.

8. Amblypygium

9. Hercules beetle

These amazing insects, which can reach a length of more than 17 cm, are one of the largest beetles in existence. And adults of this species can lift objects 850 times heavier than themselves! Despite their menacing horns, they are harmless as they are herbivores and feed mainly on fruit.

10. Black Scorpion

The black scorpion measures about 4 cm and this species is one of the least dangerous for humans. If the person is stung, they will feel a pain similar to a bee sting. But it’s really scary!

11. Chinese giant salamander

The Chinese giant salamander can reach 1.8 m in length and is the largest amphibian in the world. This huge animal eats insects, small fish and other amphibians. The species is threatened by pollution and illegal hunting.

12. Opossum

Skunks are possibly the most harmless and useful urban creatures of all. They are usually seen as a pest and accused of knocking over wastebaskets, but they are rarely a threat and easily get on their way. Many people mistake this animal for a rat for its white face, hairless tail and bright eyes.

They can digest just about anything, including bones from a dead animal, and in doing so, they help to eliminate diseases that could be spread thanks to dead bodies and food scraps.

13. Tarantula

14. Gavial

The gharial resembles a crocodile in every way, except for its long, thin snout. In general, it is believed that these reptiles can attack a human, but in reality, their jaw is fragile and makes it impossible for them to eat large mammals. They feed on small fish, insects and frogs.

What would you do if you encountered any of these creatures? Do you know other harmless animals despite their menacing appearance? Comment!
