13 Rules of Table Etiquette Only the Most Refined Know

How do you behave in a restaurant? Regardless of social class, we can say that each of us has tried at some point to follow the rules of table manners that we learned as children. Do not put your elbows on the table; hold the knife with the right hand; don’t speak with your mouth full. These are rules you are probably already familiar with. However, there are many other, less discussed codes of conduct that can sometimes cause embarrassment or even affect the reputation of those who are not aware of them.

1. Chicken can be eaten with your hands

Etiquette dictates that game meats should be eaten with cutlery in official establishments. However, there are exceptions: in certain restaurants, they can sometimes serve a plate of water and lemon next to the food. This is a sign that meat can be eaten with hands, which can be washed in water after eating.

As a last resort, the most appropriate person to say “bon appetit” would be the housewife, who prepared the food, or a chef of restaurant.

6. Meat doesn’t always need to be cut with a knife

It is not always essential to use the knife to cut meat, and sometimes this can even indicate a certain ignorance about the rules of table etiquette. For example, minced meat dishes — meatballs, pork chops, stuffed cabbage — can be cut with just a fork.

Or better: you can take them out of your mouth with your hands if you’re eating food with your hands. However, if you are eating with a knife and fork, you should remove the pits with your cutlery.

By the rules, you have to cut one piece of meat at a time and put it in your mouth right after. Carving the meat all at once is considered crude: it will cool down more quickly, as well as losing its flavor and juiciness.

The right thing is not to bite a whole piece of bread, much less cut it with a knife. It is believed that the best way is to take a small piece of bread with your right hand and then bring it to your mouth.

If canapés are served as snacks at a party or during lunch, they can be eaten with your hands. If you are, however, indoors and the canapés are served with the main courses, use the cutlery.

Seafood is always served with lemon; and few people start eating fish, shrimp or mussels without first adding a few drops of the juice of this fruit. But you have to be careful not to dirty the table or sneeze on other customers. For this, it is recommended to lower the lemon slice to the plate and cover it with the other hand – or even use a spoon – to prevent the liquid from spreading on all sides.
