13 mistakes in the saga “The Princess Diaries” that we only forgive because we like the movie so much

21 years ago, the movie The Princess Diaries hit the cinema screens. When we see it again today, we are overcome by a feeling of nostalgia, not least because the plot continues to make us laugh. It was this film that catapulted Anne Hathaway’s artistic career, making her the most beloved princess of the so-called millennial generation. Not to mention that the feature film established Julie Andrews as the cutest queen/grandmother of all time.

We who do awesome.club, we are huge fans of the original film and its sequel as well. Even so, we had not noticed the errors mentioned in this article, as only the most attentive public can identify them. Did you even notice the occurrence of any of them?

At the beginning of the first film, we see the sign that reads “Mia & Fat Louis”, as well as hands opening the blinds. When they show Mia inside, she opens the blind again in the middle, so we assume that it was initially someone from production.

In sequence, the framing shows some books on a shelf, on the left. Last on the pile is Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. However, it is assumed that the work is given to him for the first time by his grandmother, later in the plot. Obviously, this is the same edition.

During Mia’s debate speech at school, the “negative” sign on the lectern goes from straight to crooked between takes.

When Mia goes to meet Michael to talk about her “baby”, the band interrupts and the lead singer leaves, followed by two girls who take the equipment. In the next shot, the young man is standing behind where they had performed, finishing singing and talking to the same young women.

In the big scene, the queen tries to show some photos to one of the invited diplomats, but he shakes his head while eating some green soup. Only, a minute later, they serve the green soup as a special dish.

Just before the princess spills her ice cream on the hateful cheerleader Lana, she takes a bite of the top of the candy. However, when the character pushes the ice cream towards the camera, we see that it is a different ice cream, with colored granules.

During the beach party, when Mandy Moore’s character sings in front of the audience, her friends, supposedly her backing singers, sing with her. Only they seem to manage to sing the whole song without moving their mouths.

In the sequence The Princess Diaries 2, when the grandmother continues to teach Mia about good behavior, there is a fun scene with fans. However, there is also a subtle continuity error: first, the grandmother shows one side of the fan, and in the next shot, without having deliberately rotated the object, she ends up showing the other.

In the same production, in the scene where Mia and her best friend, Lilly, are sitting in front of the screen looking at a catalog of possible future husbands, there is again a small continuity error: in the first take, both eat popcorn while discussing about which of the gallant princes is best suited to betrothed to the future queen of Genovia. But suddenly, the popcorn disappears.

In the scene where Mia and Lord Nicholas Deveraux hide in a closet to talk “in private”, we see that he has a watch on his left wrist. When the camera focuses on his hand closing the door, he has no watch. This is a common type of error when scenes are recorded separately.

When Princess Mia and Andrew are by the sea, we see the boy with two cameras: one around his neck and the other over his shoulder. When they run after Princess Mia’s scarf, the young man takes all the equipment with him. However, when the two are lying on the sand and Andrew wraps the already recovered scarf around the princess’s neck, the cameras are already gone. Maybe better that way, isn’t it?

When the queen is listening to the problems of the residents of Genovia, we see a shot of other citizens waiting in line for their turn to talk to the monarch. The next person to speak is Jacqueline, only we haven’t seen her in line before.

In the pajama party scene, in the bachelorette style, we see the adventurous princess Asana sliding down the palace stairs on her mattress, but, once again, the continuity left something to be desired: the mattress label was not there the first time.
