we, from awesome.club, we listen to the opening themes of cult series to find out what it’s all about. Admittedly, some lyrics took us by surprise.
Friends, 1994–2004
A lot of people just love the show’s opening theme. The song is performed by the American band The Rembrandts, and is called I’ll Be There for You. Who would have thought that a positive melody would combine with rather depressing lyrics?

Young Witches, 1998–2006
The opening lyrics of Young Witches are not related to witches or witchcraft. The song, called How Soon Is Now? (How Soon Is It Now?), is about a man who wants love but can’t overcome his own shyness. The first lines of the song are actually a rewritten text of the novel Middlemarch: A Study of Provincial Life, by George Eliot.

Supernatural, 2005–2020
The song Carry on Wayward Son, by the band Kansas, is considered a kind of “unofficial theme” of the series about the Winchester brothers. It was written in the 70’s and made the band famous. And it’s even on the list of the 100 best hard rock songs in the world.
This upbeat song is autobiographical, but it’s not as simple as it sounds. It speaks of the spiritual search and the struggle for the truth.

Scrubs, 2001–2010
The melancholy song was found by series actor Zach Braff. The producers asked Lazlo Bane to play it at a faster pace. The musicians agreed and hit it off, as I’m no Superman became a hit. Subsequently, Braff even edited a behind-the-scenes video of the series.
I know what I’ve been told: “You have to work to feed your soul.” But I can’t do it all alone. No, I’m no Superman.
Dr. House, 2004–2012
The instrumental part of the song Teardrop, by Massive Attack, based on a simple harpsichord melody, became the theme of one of the most famous series of the 2000s. It was sung by Elizabeth Fraser, from the Cocteau Twins. The band was drawn to the vocalist’s flamboyant style, which gave the song a sense of hopelessness. Initially, Madonna was one of the candidates to perform the song, but Fraser was eventually chosen.

The hit Coração da Gente was performed by Elba Ramalho. The song says that dancing can give energy and improve life. Let’s face it, it’s hard to argue against this idea, right?

Peaky Blinders, 2013–2021
The opening theme is the song Red Right Hand, which has been used in the X-Files series, the movie Dumb & Dumb and the Scream trilogy. The translation would be something like “Red Right Hand”. This phrase is from John Milton’s poem Paradise Lost and means the punishing hand of God.

The Big Bang Theory, 2007–2019
The opening song was written by the rock band Barenaked Ladies. The group’s leader read a famous book about the “Big Bang” just before a concert and decided to rap about it on stage. Luckily, the show’s writers were present at the concert and asked the musicians to record the soundtrack for their new TV show. Only one verse appears in the series, but a full version of the song was released in 2007.

Rebelde Way, 2002–2003
The opening theme is precisely Rebelde Way, by the band Erreway. Group members Luisana Lopilato, Camila Bordonaba, Benjamín Rojas and Felipe Colombo played the lead roles in the series. Sadly, the band in its initial lineup no longer exists, but that doesn’t mean we’ve forgotten their upbeat music with unexpectedly sad lyrics.

Vikings, 2013–2020
The first lyrics of the song are dedicated to the conquering spirit of the Vikings. The brutal warriors have not stopped invading neighboring states for more than two centuries in a row. The lyrics convey the behavior of the characters in the series who cannot stifle the desire for revenge, money and power.

Slave Isaura, 1976–1977
At the beginning of each episode of Escrava Isaura, there is a song with the strange words “ungazun garunge”. There is a hypothesis that these words come from a language of African peoples, but their meaning is not very clear. The song was based on the song Retirentes by the genius songwriter and singer Dorival Caymmi. In the original, there are no words “ungazun garunge”. They were invented for the series.
