We’ve all heard the stereotype that people who wear glasses are smarter. According to a study by the University of Edinburgh, there may be some truth to this. For science, there are many ways in which a person’s bodily characteristics can influence their intelligence. Some are more surprising than others. We could be right in saying that people who wear glasses are smart, but let’s just say that many other stereotypes are completely out of place.

Taller people are generally smarter than smaller people. According to one theory, being tall helps grant status to the individual, so historically taller people have had more leadership opportunities and this has allowed them to have more access to information. Afterwards, they passed on their stature and status to their children. Taller people tend to have better jobs, which allows them to better educate their children, who are likely to inherit their stature, continuing the cycle.

Blue eyes can show a high intellect. Many famous brains had blue eyes, like Stephen Hawking and Marie Curie. Having less pigmentation than brown eyes, light penetrates blues more than browns. However, this can also make them more sensitive to light.

While there is debate about how much brain size contributes to intelligence, having a “big” head might make you smarter, but not for the expected reasons. A lower density of neurons in the brain can help it to function efficiently!

Finger length can predetermine SAT scores (test of a student’s academic skills, used for admission to US universities). One study claimed that children with smaller index fingers were better at math, and girls who had smaller index and ring fingers also appeared to be smarter.

On average, left-handed people have a larger corpus callosum that helps them process information quickly. They also tend to have a more developed right hemisphere of the brain.

Women with waists smaller than their hips, or who have an hourglass shape, are, according to a study, more intelligent than thin women. This is believed to be because they have higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids, which give more energy and are even useful in pregnant women as they can have a positive impact on their babies’ neurological development.

Weight, however, can make a difference in another way. One study claimed that overweight men and women often had less gray and white brain matter in areas that need it.
