12 Costume Details on “Game of Thrones” That Gave Us Important Plot Hints But Not Everyone Realized

During the recording of films and series, filmmakers face a major obstacle: getting as much of their idea as possible to the audience, telling the story in the most vivid and detailed way possible. To achieve this goal, directors often resort not only to dialogue and acting, but also to color, light, music, environment and, of course, the costumes of the characters.

we, from awesome.club, we decided to dive into the production of one of our favorite series — Game of Thrones — and we noticed several curious details in the costumes of the characters, which perhaps many have not noticed. So follow along!

Viewers couldn’t help but notice a change in Cersei Lannister’s style since her ascension to the Iron Throne. Elegant and powerful, she has always favored distinctly royal attire. But after achieving her coveted power, she abruptly changed her image and presented herself in public in a dark leather suit full of details.

And this was not a random change. The black of the dress symbolized the mourning for the loss of her children. The piece’s own material, the texture, is a tribute to his father, Tywin Lannister, who once wore something similar. Apparently, Cersei intended to be a tough and visionary ruler, just like Tywin. And the silver chain was a reference to Jaime’s metal arm, which it was still connected to.

For most of the series, Arya Stark learns to be a “nobody” — imperceptible, invisible, cunning. This is also represented in her clothes: almost always the costume does not carry any information about the character, it is indistinct, which is what the girl herself wanted to achieve. Furthermore, we can see braids in Arya’s garments as a sign that, if necessary, she could easily get rid of the fabric and change her image, losing her pursuers.

A curious detail is hidden in the original Sansa Stark necklace. It consists of a metallic ring and a long chain, ending at one end with something resembling a giant needle. The clue is on the surface itself: in fact, this is a reference to The Needle, Arya’s little sword, which was a gift from Jon Snow. The presence of such an accessory in Sansa’s outfit symbolized the mutual understanding between the sisters, which was not so present between them before.

This accessory is also more than a beautiful sign of power. In the center of Cersei’s minimalist crown, we can see a lion’s mane — the emblem of House Lannister — which is remarkably similar to the outline of the Iron Throne. In this way, the crown symbolized the desire for power, which she eventually obtained.

Upon returning to Westeros, Khaleesi altered her clothing not only for warmer attire (appropriate for the harsh northern climate) but also for those who demonstrated her power. That is, they began to resemble more of a soldier’s uniform, as she was ready to fight for her kingdom. The broad shoulders of her dresses symbolize strength, assertiveness, and the red details on the fabric make reference to the color of the house Targaryen, to which Daenerys belongs.

Jaime’s battle armor directly reflects the environment he lived in, which was the same as his home. The Kingslayer is a member of the royal guard, the protector of the king, so he wears a white cape. On his armor, we can see the stags’ antlers – symbol of House Baratheon, to which the king belonged. The fact is, Jaime, the guardian, could not afford to wear clothing with his own insignia while on duty. Later, however, after Robert’s death, a golden lion “Lannister” appeared in his armor.

Euron Greyjoy has proven to be one of the series’ most enduring and memorable supporting characters. He asked for Cersei’s hand in marriage wearing an outfit worthy of rock stars: a black blouse with a star print. The costume designer explained that the aim was to emphasize her elegance, her frankness. And to show that Euron had certain problems: he tried very hard to take Jaime’s place, as if he wanted to be under his skin. Therefore, the stars on his outfit appear to be made up of small pieces of fabric.

As he headed towards the Wall to serve in the Night’s Watch, Jon Snow wore a black outfit—the hallmark of all those who defended the border of Westeros from the north. Later, when Jon Snow spent time on the other side of the Wall with the wildlings, his costume was given animal skin, just like his new friends already dressed. And only after returning to Winterfell, winning the Battle of the Bastards, is Jon’s costume added brown tones — the color of House Stark.

At the end of the series, the character’s clothing reflects all three major periods of his life: the color black, the color brown, and the skin.

Throughout the series, Margaery was married three times: to Renly Baratheon, Joffrey Baratheon, and Tommen Baratheon. But now let’s take a closer look at the wedding dress that the character wore in her 2nd marriage to Joffrey. The dress has a vine-like design, symbolizing that her new husband will soon fall into the Tyrell trap. Margaery’s hair features a very complex and high hairstyle, to indicate that she will become the most powerful woman in the kingdom, even competing with Cersei herself – who also liked to show her status through her hairstyle.

If we remember correctly, Tyrion was tried by the court and received an unfair sentence. If we take a closer look at his costume, we can see that the color palette has changed: instead of the usual red and yellow – typical Lannister colors – we can also notice darker tones, almost black. Not only does this reflect Tyrion’s internal state, it’s also something of a hint as to what the outcome of the trial will be.

In Season 3, after losing Khal Drogo, Daenerys often wears blue dresses. And this is no accident: blue is the color of the Dothraki, a rare natural pigment, which they knew how to obtain. Daenerys mourns her husband and wears clothes in different shades of that color as a tribute to Drogo.

Theon accompanied Sansa Stark to her wedding ceremony to Ramsay Bolton. Everyone noticed Sansa’s white outfit, but Theon’s clothes are also worth mentioning: over her shoulders, we see a beautiful brocade cloak. This is a symbol to pay tribute to Catelyn Stark — Sansa’s mother — who was unable to attend her daughter’s wedding. Catelyn was one of the few characters on the series who wore brocade robes. Because of this, Theon chose to wear such a cloak at the most significant moment for Sansa.
