Being raised in a typical nuclear family is not necessarily a requirement for a child to become a successful and happy adult. In this sense, long before LGBT discourse gained traction, many celebrities of our day grew up in families considered unconventional.
In this post, the awesome.club recalls the cases of some famous people raised by LGBT parents, who refute prejudices and prove that parents’ guidance doesn’t matter, as long as there is love, overcoming and will to win!
1. Mandy Moore
Mandy’s parents divorced after nearly 30 years of marriage and her mother, Stacy Moore-Friedman, started a new life with a partner, tennis player Claudette Laliberte. Mandy is very supportive of her mother’s lifestyle.
2. Amy Adams
Amy was born into a Mormon family, although her parents, who had 7 children, divorced when she was 11 and left the church. That same year, Amy’s mother, Kathryn, moved in with a woman. Despite the divorce, Amy’s parents seem to have maintained a good relationship. Her mother is very happy with the actress’ career and Amy often invites her to the Oscars and other events.
3. Kendall and Kylie Jenner
Kendall and Kylie’s father, retired Olympic decathlete Bruce Jenner, transitioned from male to female in 2015 after sex reassignment surgery, going by the name Caitlyn Jenner. The surgery took place following his divorce from then-wife Kris Jenner in 2013. However, Caitlyn’s daughters accepted this change with deep love and understanding.
4. Jay-Z
Gloria Carter, Jay’s mother, came out as gay in 2017 after sharing the news with her son. Jay was very happy and even confessed that he cried, when he realized that Gloria had to hide it for decades. He later dedicated the song to his mother smile, on her album 4:44, recorded the day after she came out.
5. Robert DeNiro
Robert’s parents divorced when he was still a little boy. In 1944, Robert De Niro Sr., a famous abstract expressionist painter, came out publicly, maintaining a relationship with poet Robert Duncan. Later, the actor produced a documentary about his father’s life.

11. Liza Minnelli
Liza’s father, Italian-American theater and film director Vincente Minnelli, was openly gay when he lived in New York, according to his biographer, Emmanuel Levy.
