Australia can be a very exotic place in the eyes of some people, even more so in the case of Brazil, with a very different culture from this Oceanian country. For example, would certain Brazilians get used to taking only five-minute showers? Or not greet friends with that famous peck on the cheek? Well, those are just a few differences between the two peoples.
O awesome.club thinks Australia is a fascinating place and has gathered some customs of the country that may sound a little rare to us Brazilians. Check out!
1. Some Australians like to walk barefoot on the street
A very common scene there is to see people walking without shoes, whether on the street, in the market or in the mall. It is also normal for children to walk with only socks on after school. This is a local custom due to the country’s high temperatures, as well as the “beach culture”.
2. It is common to fill the sink to wash all the dishes
Here, the normal thing is to do the dishes and then rinse them, but in Australia this task is a little different. There, it is necessary to fill the sink with water and detergent, place the utensils in it and then, soap and rinse everything with the same water. The reason is the scarcity of this resource in the country and everyone is oriented to save.
3. Many Australians are true sports lovers
Australians have a very close relationship with sport, with several modalities considered a national passion. These include rugby, cricket, Australian football and tennis, as well as many others.🇧🇷As a result, the country hosts several world sporting events, such as the Australian Open and the yacht race from Sydney to Hobart, as well as other lesser-known events, like the camel races of Boulia.
4. Generally, the baths last around 5 minutes.
As with cleaning dishes, Australians also need to save water in the shower. Therefore, in addition to many women do not wash their hair every day. Thus, many women do not wash their hair every day. Some homes even have water reuse systems.
5. Ways to reuse water
Due to the need to save water, Australians have to reinvent themselves to reuse this resource. While in Brazil we tend to avoid waste by capturing rainwater, or even reusing water from cooking food in plants, for example, in Australia this attitude takes on peculiar ways of developing, such as the toilet that reuses water from the sink to fill the flush, or even a submersible pump to capture the bath water and water the plants in the backyard. Curious but brilliant, isn’t it?
6. Water temperature
With the constant high temperatures and even temperature records, it is not only in summer that the cold bath ceases to exist for Australians. In January 2019, for example, the south of the country reached around 50ºC. “’Cold water’ at the end of my seven o’clock ‘cold shower’. I don’t use hot water in the shower for more than three weeks. Please send cold.” internet account, showing (image above) the water temperature at the indicated time.
Therefore, hot baths are more common than we think (even when not
desired).
7. Most natives greet each other with just a handshake
In many countries, especially Latin ones like Brazil, it is normal to greet even strangers with a kiss or two on the cheek. In Australia this practice is not very well regarded. There, the common thing, even for acquaintances, is to exchange just a handshake. This is not to say that Australians are cold, they are very warm, but physical contact is seen as something more intimate.
8. The keys only open the door from the outside of the house
Many of us Brazilians tend to lock the door with a key when entering the house. However, in Australia, the doors of many homes have only one handle on the inside and the key only works on the outside. When leaving, the door is automatically closed and only opens with the key, so there is no need to forget it at home.
9. They withdraw money from the market after paying the bills
One of the most practical customs in Australia is to withdraw some money from the supermarket cashier after paying for purchases. The person passes the amount on the card and the employee asks if she wants to make a “cash out”, that is, if she wants to take an amount in cash.
10. Australian custom of not killing insects
Australia is known for its exotic and diverse wildlife, so much so that the country has an environmental code that guides people to preserve insects. So, it is common for residents to just put these animals out of the house, without killing them. It is also normal for some people to have insects as pets.
11. Pedestrians are also fined
Traffic laws are taken seriously in Australia, so much so that crossing out of the lane or at a red light can generate a fine for the pedestrian. Drivers are required to stop when someone crosses the street. In the event of an accident, the person who hit the car will be fined, can respond criminally and will have to pay the injured party’s expenses.
12. They have public grills
Australians love getting together with friends and they love having barbecues. This passion is so great that there are public grills on beaches and parks across the country. The equipment is automatic and of great quality, so that everyone can enjoy the experience in the best possible way.
