A film project involves a lot of teamwork, and although most of the time the director has the final word, from time to time the actors end up putting their opinions and making personal decisions about their characters or even about the unfolding of a film. some scenes. Of course, actions of this type involve a certain risk, but sometimes these personal decisions end up being more accurate than the ideas that were in the original script.
With that in mind, the awesome.club separated some movies in which the actors made decisions that weren’t in the script and got it right.
1. Jason Isaacs asked for a different look for Lucius Malfoy in the Harry Potter saga
Jason Isaacs did a great job playing the villainous Lucius Malfoy, a pure-blood wizard who is always talking bad about wizards he says are of lesser blood. Interestingly, the initial idea was that he had short hair with black and white streaks and that he wore a striped outfit. Jason didn’t like the idea at all and refused to follow the script; for him, the character “wouldn’t dress like a muggle”.
The actor suggested that the character have long white hair and wear an ensemble that shows off his full power.
2. Crispin Glover preferred the Charlie’s Angels villain to be mute, because he didn’t like the dialogues
Crispin Glover played the villain in the most recent version of Charlie’s Angels. At first, the actor turned down the role because, according to him, his character’s dialogue was very bad. After some time, he went back, but decided that the villain should be mute. Director McG accepted the proposal and Crispin participated in the film without saying a word.
3. Tom Cruise wanted to appear more in The Mummy
The Mummy was Universal’s first and only attempt to integrate classic monsters such as Werewolf, Frankenstein and Dracula into its own cinematic universe. The film stars Tom Cruise, who, uncomfortable with the time he would be on screen, hired two other screenwriters to expand his role on the scene.
That’s how the movie stopped being a horror story and became more of an action movie, but this time with a result that didn’t even come close to other films starring the actor.
4. Chris Hemsworth asked that they change the profile of Thor a little bit
Chris Hemsworth has played Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since the first film in 2011. However, before starting the third adventure of the Norse God, in Thor: Ragnarok, the actor made the following comment: “How I was very bored with the character , we decided to do something different”. Director Taika Waititi understood what the actor was asking for and allowed the character to become more fun and spontaneous.
5. Dacre Montogmery proposed ideas for playing a more human Billy in Stranger Things
Dacre Montgomery played the evil Billy in the second and third seasons of Stranger Things. To give even more depth to the character, the actor proposed to the Duffer brothers that his past gain more relevance in the story, especially the absence of his biological mother. The suggestion was accepted and ended up entering the narrative of the third season of the series.
6. Halle Berry asked for more role in X-Men 3: The Last Stand
Halle Berry played Storm in the first three films of the X-Men saga, which were produced between 2000 and 2006. However, before starting work on the third film, the actress stated that if her character did not have a greater role, she would not would participate. The producers agreed and the superheroine had more prominence in the story.
7. Mike Myers asked for Shrek’s accent to be changed when the voices had already been recorded
Mike Myers is the actor responsible for voicing the character Shrek in the first four films of the saga. Interestingly, when the film had already been shot, the actor was not comfortable with the Canadian accent given to the protagonist and requested a re-recording to give the ogre a Scottish accent, very characteristic of the character in the original.
The re-recording of the voice cost the production approximately $4 million more, an amount they were fortunately able to recoup, as the films were very successful.
8. Alan Rickman rewrote some lines in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves
Alan Rickman plays the Sheriff of Nottingham in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, a 1991 classic starring Kevin Costner. However, the British actor found the script very bad and decided to change some lines, especially to make his character more dynamic and unpredictable.
The ideas worked so well that his co-stars, who didn’t know the actor that well, naturally reacted to the changes he began to make.
9. Samuel L. Jackson asked that they retain the original title of Serpents on Board
While it may seem uncreative, the title of Serpents on Board is pretty self-explanatory. However, the film was barely given another name. When actor Samuel L. Jackson arrived on the set in Vancouver, he learned that the producers wanted the name changed to Pacific Flight 121. Samuel didn’t like it and asked the producers to keep the original title because, for him, it was a simple name and at the same time catchy.
10. Benicio del Toro asked for his character’s accent to be changed in The Usual Suspects
Benicio del Toro plays a supporting role in the film The Usual Suspects. 11. Denzel Washington Didn’t Want To Kiss Julia Roberts In The Pelican Dossier
The Pelican Dossier is a thriller starring Denzel Washington and Julia Roberts that was released at a time when the actor was very successful. An eventual romance between the two characters was something quite tempting for both the producers and the audience, but the actor asked that all romantic scenes be eliminated, as he did not feel comfortable kissing a woman who was not of his ethnicity.
Do you know any other examples like these? And if you could change one line or one scene in a movie, what would you change?
