11 Actors Who Endured Very Unpleasant Costumes For The Movie’s Sake

In movies, actors sometimes have to endure several hours of makeup application, wearing uncomfortable and cumbersome costumes to fully transform into a character. The actor, who played Captain Jean-Luc Picard for seven years, had to wear a spandex suit, made in a smaller size to create a perfectly smooth, wrinkle-free surface on the suit. It was too tight and put terrible strain on her shoulders, neck, and back.

“I hated that costume. And we got rid of it after the show’s second season, thanks to my chiropractor, who offered to sue the studio if the producers didn’t remove this outfit from me for the damage done to my spine,” Patrick Stewart said in an interview.

The actor, who played the role of Samwise Gamgee, had to wear fake hobbit feet with which he could run and climb hills. And they took over an hour to put on. And both Sean Astin and the other hobbit-actors had to stay on their feet during the entire process, otherwise their ankles would buckle and the fake feet would become misshapen.

While playing Gimli in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, John Rhys-Davies had such a severe allergic reaction to makeup that his face swelled up. Because of this, John was in constant pain. Therefore, he could only shoot every other day, so that his skin had at least one “day off” to recover.

When asked if he would reprise his role in The Hobbit, he said no, as he wasn’t sure his face “would withstand that kind of punishment again”.

Although Tom Felton didn’t wear any of these complex costumes while filming Harry Potter, he also had a hard time. Not precisely him, but his hair. To play the superhero, Ron Perlman wore a special suit made of foam prosthetic pieces that covered his back and chest. It took four hours to assemble, and he went through this process every day. In total, the actor was dressed up 86 times for filming.

Filming took place in a hot summer in California, so everything on set was overheated. Johnny Depp also went through some tough times. His suit was made of a material that made him sweat even more.
