10 Subtle Signs That a Marriage Won’t Last Long

We all want to find a special love for the rest of our lives, but practice shows us that “fairy tales” are rare exceptions in the midst of the harsh reality of everyday life. Europeans, in the last decade, started getting divorced 2.5 times more and getting married twice less. The good news, however, is that divorce can be predicted (and perhaps prevented), and this is confirmed by scientific research.

we, from awesome.club, we hope to see more and more happy and fulfilled families, so we studied several scientific studies in depth and selected 10 most typical precursors of divorce, evidenced by scientists. Follow up!

1. Smiles in children’s photos

Psychologists carried out a series of tests to find out if it was possible to predict divorce in photos of children and young people. In one of the studies, the photos from the school yearbook and the intensity of the smile present in them were evaluated on a scale from 1 to 10. The classification was based on the flexion of 2 muscles: one that pulls the mouth up, and another that creates the wrinkles around the eyes.

None of the people in the 10% with the highest smile intensity had been divorced, and among the 10% with the lowest ratings, 1 in 4 people were divorced. Overall, the results showed that people who appeared to frown more in photos are 5 times more likely to get divorced than people who smile in photos.

2. Tone of voice

A computer algorithm can predict marriage success with an accuracy of 79%, using only the tone of voice of the spouses when they communicate with each other. Scientists analyzed the conversations of more than 100 couples who went to a psychologist, and then looked at the marital status of those involved over the next 5 years.

Apparently, the pitch of the sound, intensity, vibration and timbre can indicate a certain emotional state. “What you say — it’s not the only thing that matters. Also of great importance is the way something is said. Our study confirms that this is also true for romantic relationships between two people,” the scientists said.

3. Colleagues of the opposite sex

According to Danish researchers, people who work mostly with people of the opposite sex are 15% more likely to get divorced. The scope of this study took on a large scale. All couples who entered into marriage in Denmark between 1981 and 2002 were studied: 100,000 of them are already divorced.

4. Maternal education

Most of the time, it is women who file for divorce. With that in mind, studies have shown that most couples copy the behavior of their fathers, especially their mothers. Sociologists studied the behavior of 7,000 people and realized that if a mother changed partners frequently (different marriages or co-living), so would her children as adults.

5. Devaluation of conflicts

John Gottman named 4 “omens” of an impending divorce: contempt, victimization, criticism and devaluation of conflicts🇧🇷 Exactly the fourth “knight of the Apocalypse” that seems innocent enough at first glance, but is, in fact, a dangerous strategy of behavior. Just imagine: you feel like you’re finally ready to discuss something that’s stuck in your throat, and your partner just decides not to talk to you about it.

This may seem like the spouses are keeping the peace this way, but that’s not quite the case. Discussion may not be the best way to talk, but it is from there that people are often able to speak what they really think — the truth. Sometimes it is necessary to engage in a family “battle” to resolve accumulated problems and frustrations. If you choose to simply ignore such conflicting situations, problems will pile up even further.

6. Husband’s negative attitude towards his wife’s friends

Scientists analyzed the relationship of 373 couples during 16 years of marriage. By the end of that period, 46% of couples had divorced, and often husbands’ criticism of their wife’s friends in the first year of marriage predicted the separation in the future.

According to studies, this is due to the fact that women’s relationships with their female friends are characterized by high intimacy and strong emotional support. Such relationships tend to last longer, while men more often rely on joint activities to create the same bond. Consequently, men find it easier to change their circles of friendships and find it more difficult to form bonds with friends of their wives that they find unpleasant.

7. Excessive Dependence Between Newlyweds

Psychologist Ted Houston studied the behavior of 168 couples during their 13 years of married life. The results were published in Journal of Interpersonal Relations and Group Processes in 2001: “Couples who divorced after 7 years or more of marriage demonstrated almost 33% greater dependence at the beginning of the relationship when compared to couples in more successful relationships”.

This is related to the fact that couples who show excessive affection and romanticism at the beginning of the relationship are more likely to separate due to the greater difficulty in maintaining the same intensity of feelings over time. “Believe it or not, but marriages that start at lower levels of ‘Hollywood romance’ typically tend to have a brighter future,” says expert Aviva Patz.

8. Index finger longer than the ring finger

Biologists from the University of Oxford have concluded that women whose index finger is longer than the ring finger are more likely to cheat on their partners. This phenomenon is described in a study published in the scientific journal Biology Letters🇧🇷

The (curious) fact is that the length of the fingers is influenced by estrogen hormones, which also affect femininity and cause greater “popularity” for the opposite sex. The same phenomenon can be observed in the great primates, laboratory rats and the diamond-mandarin birds of the family Strild🇧🇷

9. Low income and unemployment

It is quite evident that living under limited conditions is quite difficult for anyone. Relationships in low-income families break up more often than in financially stable families. This was confirmed by Bob Birrel, who is a co-author of a study on spending by couples after separation.

“People think that the Child Support Agency uses drastic and inhumane measures to make men penniless on account of the pension. In fact, most divorced men are simply not paid enough to support a mother and a child.”

10. Narrow bed

For mental and physical health, as well as healthy sleep in the family, spouses need to sleep separately or in a fairly large bed. Scientists dealing with sleep problems have observed that 30-40% of couples sleep in separate beds. And they are right, because poor sleep quality can lead to divorce. So, if you want to maintain a good and healthy relationship with your partner, don’t forget to sleep well.
