10+ Secrets About Harry Potter Movie Costumes That We’ve Been Told More Than JK Rowling Herself

20 years have passed since the premiere of the first film in the Harry Potter franchise, and in that time, the characters of this magical world have become close to us. We can endlessly watch our favorite scenes from the saga, each time discovering something new about the Harry Potter Universe. However, some details escape our attention. For example, we rarely pay attention to the clothes of the characters, while the work of the costume designers tells us a lot about the protagonists and the development of the plot.

we, from awesome.clubwe decided to reveal to our readers some secrets hidden in the costumes of the characters in the saga.

1. Hermione, Ron and Harry’s Scarves

Costume designers gave hints about each character’s personality even with a small accessory — the scarf. We can see that each of the protagonists uses it differently: Hermione ties it up carefully, Harry throws the end of the scarf over his shoulder, and Ron’s accessory is simply thrown around his neck, with the ends loose.

2. Sweatshirts of the protagonists

In the third installment of the franchise — Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban — the main characters become teenagers, which is also reflected in their clothes. According to the film’s costume designer, she wanted the sorcerers’ clothes to have a more modern and casual look, so that the protagonists would look like teenagers on the other side of the screen. Therefore, in the film, we see Ron, Hermione and Harry wearing jeans and hoodies.

Fans have also noticed that as the characters grow older, Ron and Hermione begin to adopt a similar style of dress. For example, they both wear striped sweatshirts. Perhaps this is a sign of the romantic feeling that is forming between them. At the same time, Harry’s outfit doesn’t quite match the duo’s, and that’s also no coincidence, because at one point he moves away from his friends.

3. Molly Weasley dresses

The Weasley family isn’t rich, so Molly doesn’t buy fancy, expensive clothes, but knits them. At Christmas, she presents her family with handmade sweaters, and she wears a multicolored knitted dress herself. We can assume that, to create this dress, Molly used the yarn left over from the sweaters, socks and other things she knitted for the family.

Despite financial difficulties, Molly, like any woman, wants to look elegant, so she embellishes her dresses with crochet details.

4. Uniforms for students from other schools

In the movie Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, the Triwizard Tournament features students from other schools: sophisticated girls from Beauxbatons Academy of Magic and tough guys from Durmstrang Institute. The film’s costume designer admitted that when creating the students’ costumes, she was inspired by different cultures. Therefore, the Beauxbatons girls’ uniforms have references to France: the blue color, present in the uniform, is very significant for that country and, in addition, the Academy students wear hats, which is also associated with French girls. To emphasize the girls’ femininity, the costume designer dressed them in light, airy dresses and capes.

Durmstrang students wear fur capes and hats and crimson robes. The film’s costume designers were certainly inspired by Slavic folklore. It was important to show that Durmstrang represents a completely different culture, which is why the student uniforms are so thick and literally heavy.

5. Tailleurs by Dolores Umbridge

In Dolores’ personality, it was important to point out that she has power and that she is quite conservative. For example, she always has the same hairstyle and follows the same color palette in her clothes. Dolores loves the color pink, but over the course of the plot the shades of her outfits change.

The film’s costume designer commented, “I started off with light pink, but it got brighter as the character got more and more hysterical.” However, Dolores’ look contradicts the traditional image of villains. The costume designers deliberately bet on contrast to make the character more interesting and at the same time sinister: the sheer cruelty of the character is hidden behind the apparent softness. The costume designer admitted that she has never worked with so much wool and mohair.

6. Gilderoy Lockhart Wig

In the movie Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, attentive viewers have noticed that there is a wig on the Defense Against the Dark Arts professor’s desk. In the end, it turns out that Lockhart is just a fraud, who has been deceiving everyone by appropriating other people’s exploits. So he lies all the time and about everything, and even his luxurious golden hair is fake.

7. Bellatrix Lestrange’s Medieval Costumes

In an interview, the film’s costume designer admitted that Bellatrix is one of her favorite characters and that working on her outfits was a real pleasure. By the way, it’s no accident that all her outfits are black, as Bellatrix’s maiden name is Black. It was also important to point out that she comes from an ancient noble family, and this is reflected in her clothes, which have elements characteristic of medieval fashion.

It is worth paying attention to the sleeves of the dress: in the Middle Ages, they were not sewn together, but tied to the dress, as in Bellatrix’s dress. One more important detail is the cropped skirt. In medieval times women wore dresses with trains and their length depended on the woman’s social position. At the entrance to the city, each woman was required to present a document proving that she could actually wear a tail of a certain length, which was cut off if it did not conform to her social position. Judging by the length of Bellatrix’s skirt, we can assume that she may have exaggerated her social importance. She also wears a corset, an indispensable item of medieval costume.

8. Severus Snape and the Gryffindor Scarf

Severus Snape is one of the most mysterious and complex characters in the franchise. It is no accident that in the course of the sequence where he is hit by a death spell, a striped Gryffindor scarf can be seen hanging on the wall. Perhaps the fact reveals Severus’ true inclinations, and shows that in due course he should have gone to Gryffindor instead of Slytherin.

In the book, Dumbledore once uttered a sentence regarding the distribution of newcomers. He said, “Sometimes it seems to me that we make decisions too quickly.” Maybe the teacher was right. Or maybe the hanging scarf means people can change and improve.

9. Neville Longbottom’s Remembrall

From the beginning of the saga, Neville was considered a clumsy and comical character. Yes, he comes from an ancient family of wizards, but even so, he is not good enough in the magical arts and repeatedly finds himself in absurd situations. In one of the scenes in the movie Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, he is given a reminder by his grandmother, a magical device that serves as a reminder and turns red if the person has forgotten something. Neville confesses to his friends that the problem is that he can’t remember what he forgot. However, a closer look reveals that he has forgotten his robe: all the students next to him are dressed in full uniforms except him.

However, as he grows older, Neville gains strength and courage, and in the latter part of the saga, he transforms from a shy boy into a warrior. In the final battle for Hogwarts, he appears to have copied his father’s image from an old photo. A curious generational continuity.

10. Green uniforms in the first part of the franchise

Early in the first film, when Harry still doesn’t know he’s a wizard, the Dursley family takes him to the zoo. Near the House of Reptiles, appears a group of students dressed in green uniforms. We can assume that this is a reference to the Slytherin college, whose main color is green and whose symbol is a snake. In fact, the students’ uniforms are very similar to those used at Hogwarts.

11. Number 7 in Harry’s sports uniform

Fans of the franchise have already noticed that Harry Potter’s Quidditch jersey number is 7. In general, in JK Rowling’s world, this is a significant number: 7 books of the saga were written, Lord Voldemort had 7 Horcruxes and the last of them it was Harry. It’s quite symbolic. However, the film’s costume designer confessed that the choice for Harry’s sports uniform is a reference to David Beckham, who played with that number for Manchester United, an English football club.

12. Hagrid’s Pink Umbrella

Hagrid is the keeper of the Keys and Grounds at Hogwarts. At first glance, he’s just a rough, unkempt giant in a dirty old fur coat. However, despite his frightening appearance, he is a good-souled person.

Hagrid was expelled from Hogwarts after being falsely accused by Tom Riddle, and his magic wand was destroyed by the Ministry of Magic. However, he still saved the wand shards and hid them inside the umbrella handle. The color pink tells us that Hagrid is a gentle and sentimental giant. It is worth remembering how he adorned his old coat with a huge flower brooch when he wanted to impress Madame Maxime.

13. Lucius Malfoy’s wardrobe change

Despite being a feared villain, Lucius is one of the most elegant characters in the wizarding world: he wears fancy suits and walks with a very refined cane. However, in the latter part of the franchise, his style changes. Now he’s not an aristocrat but a warrior, and his quilted leather outfit looks like armor.

Also in the last part of the movie, we can see the Prisoner of Azkaban number tattooed on Lucius’ neck. It is clear that after returning from Azkaban, he became a different person: he lost his elegance, stopped shaving and taking care of his hair. At the end of the story, the villain’s moral and physical defeat is evident.
