10 Places That Were Censored On Google Maps That You Probably Didn’t Know

Google Maps has managed to bring us closer to the places we always dreamed of visiting, but that we couldn’t see beyond the photographs. It is a technological advance that has helped us enormously to locate ourselves on the streets, creating something akin to “virtual tourism”. But interestingly, not all places are visible: some images have been distorted for specific reasons, especially related to the security field, such as US military bases. What would you think if we said, for example, that even your home can be censored? In this post you can find out why.

At the awesome.club, we made a list of the strangest places in the world that Google Maps does not allow us to see. Read the post until the end! When you’re done, you’ll want to book a visit to these places right away.

10. 2216 Seymour Ave Cleveland, Ohio. Known as “The House of Horrors”

At 2207 Seymour Ave, in Cleveland, USA, a confusing space appears that prevents you from seeing the outside of that place known as “The House of Horrors”. There, unfortunately, was a hidden woman kidnapper. Google Maps made the decision to censor the place even before the house was demolished, seeking to prevent the curious from visiting the place virtually.

9. Stockton-on-Tees, County Durham, England

8. Mururoa, in French Polynesia

Among the islands of French Polynesia in the South Pacific there is a place called Moruroa, which apparently hides something. A large part of the island is not visible on Google Maps and the rest is pretty blurry. France carried out more than 150 nuclear weapons tests near that location between 1966 and 1996, which makes one wonder if maybe that’s the reason for it all. The site has several military buildings, in addition to containing an airstrip, a pier and some buildings.

7. Tantauco National Park, Chile

Surely you are also wondering why a park could be censored. Well, this decision is based on the fact that this nature reserve, located on Ilha Grande Chiloé, is a place where many endangered species live. This place is covered by a large patch that does not allow you to see anything related to the National Park.

6. HAARP Project Headquarters, Alaska, USA

This place has been the core of countless conspiracy theories. There, an investigation of active auroras is carried out to control the different frequencies of the weather. This program is funded by the Air Force, Navy, University of Alaska and DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency), all linked to the US government. Is that why it can’t be fully visualized on Google Maps?

5. WH Dorrance House Residence, Camdel New York

Home owner WH Dorrance House asked Google Maps to blur the windows of the place after users of the app discovered handprints on the glass, even though the house has not been inhabited since 2010.

He made the request to avoid superstitions that would prevent him from selling the property. So while it sounds incredible, yes, it is possible to censor your home if you wish, for security reasons or as in this case, for any reason that could interfere with the sale of the property.

4. Babylon, Iraq

What for a long time was considered one of the most important cities of antiquity, recognized for its impressive hanging gardens considered one of the Wonders of the Ancient World, is today an unrecognizable mark on satellites. The ruins of this Iraqi city were rebuilt by Saddam Hussein in the late 20th century. The question is, why isn’t it visible on Google Maps? Political or religious issues? What we do know about this is that not even its beautiful gardens and plantations are visible.

3. Minami Torishima Airport, Japan

It is located on the island of Minamitorishima. It’s the only airport in that area, and strangely, it looks completely whitewashed on Google Maps. The weirdest thing is that the app doesn’t link any photos to this site, so it’s not even possible to see it in visual references across the map. It is currently inhabited by members of the Japanese Navy.

2. La Mola Military Fort, Spain

1. Cartagena Heliport (Murcia, Spain)

This former military enclave, located in the region of Murcia, appears with a large pixelated gray stain that does not allow to see what would be inside the place, which is a simple heliport since 2002. Perhaps the reason for its censorship is that, until then, it was a key point for the Spanish military forces. Currently, it is used for the celebration of popular festivals.
