10 Movies Inspired by Books (Even If They Just Take the Title)

There are many movies inspired by real stories or literary works. Of the latter, there is a significant amount in which the audiovisual version has very little to do with the book. They’re so far apart in pacing, story, dialogue, and even characters that upon seeing them, you wouldn’t even suspect they had a written version.

For that reason, the awesome.club prepared an unmissable list of films that, although inspired by books, the only thing they took from them was the title – and, in some cases, not even that.

1. World War Z

The film is a film adaptation of the novel World War Z written by Max Brooks. However, it can be said that the only thing that survived from the book on film was its title.

THE written version tells how a man is forced, through investigations and interviews with survivors of a strange virus with a zombie mutation, to find the origin and cure of the infection. O movie directed by Marc Forster tells how a man, in the middle of a war against zombies, tries to stop the pre-apocalyptic expansion in the world.

2. The Divergent Series: Convergent

Convergente (“Faithful” in Portuguese) is the third part of the “Divergente” trilogy. The film, inspired by the book
which bears the same name, is another in which the writers put aside the written version and changed the entire story.

O book written by Veronica Roth tells how Tris and Four, after crossing the world they knew, face new challenges. Tris is forced to deal with human nature and her own instincts. At the movie directed by Robert Schwentke, after passing through the wall, Tris must quickly decide who to trust in order to face a conflict that threatens humanity.

3. Forrest Gump: The Storyteller

“Forest Gump”, the novel written by Winston Groom, was adapted for the cinema under the direction of Robert Zemeckis.

THE film adaptation narrates the story of Forrest Gump, a young man who since childhood has been slightly mentally retarded, but thanks to his persistence he overcomes several episodes in his life. At original version, Forrest tells the story from a newspaper and not while waiting for a bus, as in the film. His relationship with his mother, with Jenny Curran and his life in general, completely differs from what was told in the film.

4. Shrek

The story of Shrek the ogre was born in a book written by William Steig. The film adaptation was in charge of Andrew Adamson and Vicky Jenson.

O book tells the story of Shrek, an ogre who, after leaving home, ends up finding his perfect partner. THE version which was brought to the big screen relates that Shrek, in order to recover his swamp, had to go on the adventure of rescuing Princess Fiona from a huge dragon and getting her to agree to marry the prince.

5. Operation Cupid

the famous movie Cupid operation is inspired by the book Lisa and Lottie, written by Erich Kästner.

THE written version tells the story of two twins who meet at a summer camp and realize that they were separated at birth. At movie versionafter the twins meet, they try to get their parents to go on a date, while at the same time thwarting their father’s marriage to a very young woman who wants them out of their lives.

6. Mean Girls

the famous movie Mean Girls also enters this list of films that have nothing to do with the texts they were inspired by. The story takes as reference the book Queen Bees & Wannabeswritten by Rosalind Wiseman.

THE written version is of the self-help genre and is intended to guide parents whose daughters start
the high school. O moviedirected by Mark Waters, is a teen comedy that recreates the story of Cady,
a young woman who has just entered high school and strikes up a friendship with three popular girls
and manipulative.

7. Jurassic Park: Jurassic Park

The book Jurassic Park, written by Michael Crichton, is the basis that gave rise to the famous dinosaur movie that bears his name.

THE movie version was directed by Steven Spielberg. It tells the story of some people who, along with three specialists, were invited to a park inhabited by genetically created dinosaurs. THE written version is set on an island where a group of men and women who wanted to commercialize genetic engineering lose control of their experiments and leave the world at the mercy of huge beasts.

8. How to Train Your Dragon

The book How to Train Your Dragon, written by Cressida Cowell, inspired the film of the same name by Dean DeBlois and Chris Sanders.

O book tells the story of how struggle and perseverance led the young Viking Horrible Hogfish III to become the ultimate warrior. O movie tells how Hiccup, the son of the chief of the Viking tribe, hunts a dragon, but when he realizes that the animal is injured, events lead him to completely change his life.

9. The Polar Express

The Polar Express is a picture book for children that was published in 1985 and written by Chris Van Allsburg. After Jumanji, this was Van Allsburg’s second book to be adapted into a movie.

THE movie version directed by Robert Zemeckis recreates the story of a boy who doubts the existence of Santa Claus and travels to the North Pole to find him. O book tells the story of a boy who waits for Santa Claus to arrive on his roof, but is surprised by the noise of a train that ends up taking him to the North Pole.

10. The Perfect Choice

The movie Pitch Perfect is the film adaptation of the book Pitch Perfect: The Quest for Collegiate A Cappella Glory, written by Mickey Rapkin.

THE movie versiondirected by Jason Moore, recreates how the university group called The Barden Bellas venture into an a cappella music championship to defeat other teams and reach the national competition. very different from yours written versionin which the reader is introduced to a world where university a cappella music groups are saturated with ego and superiority, and use these defects as weapons to crush the rest, suggesting that striking a chord is not for weak groups.
