For thousands of years, human beings have known that our Planet is a beautiful sphere that revolves around the Sun and at the same time in itself. This makes us enjoy the day and night, the heat in the summer and the cold in the winter, for example. Thanks to the fact that the Earth is round, other phenomena also occur without which life as we know it would not be possible. But what if, instead of being an almost perfect circle, the world was a flat disk?
At the awesome.club, we wanted to know the answer to that question and we share with you everything we researched on the topic. And, of course, life would be very different from what we are used to.
1. Gravity would be different from how we know it
According to the law proposed by Isaac Newton, gravity not only pulls us down, but towards the center of the Earth. For that reason, our feet are on the ground and we don’t float around.
If the Earth were flat, the force of gravity would push us to the flat center and, for example, an activity as simple as walking would become exhausting. The further we moved away from the center, the greater the gravitational force of attraction pushing us horizontally; somehow it would be like we were constantly climbing a steep hill.
2. Trees would grow diagonally
For the same reason that on a flat Earth we would walk at an angle, trees and plants would grow diagonally, with the roots pointing towards the gravitational center, while the crowns would go in the opposite direction.
3. The seasons would be the same across the planet
As the Earth is an almost perfect sphere that orbits the Sun and also rotates on an axis with a slight inclination, it is possible to experience different seasons at the same time and in different parts of the globe. While in one hemisphere of the planet it is winter, in the other it is summer. The tilt of the Earth’s axis causes the sun’s rays to reach the surface at different angles, according to latitude and time of year. That is, the closer we are to the poles, the more inclined the sun’s rays will be, therefore, they will heat up less.
If our Planet were flat, the sun’s rays would hit the entire surface at the same angle; and the result would be that all regions (in the whole plane) would have the same season.
4. There would be no satellites, so there would be no GPS
According to the flat Earth theory, the Sun and Moon revolve around the world, radiating light and heat downward like a table lamp. If that were the case, artificial satellites could not work as they revolve around the planet. Without satellites, for example, we wouldn’t be able to use GPS (and get lost more often).
5. We would all see the same constellations
On a spherical Earth, if we look at the night sky, we can see different constellations depending on which hemisphere we are in. If we move north, the Pleiades start to become more and more visible; if, instead, we go south, we can observe the Southern Cross. On a flat Earth, the same constellations and stars would be visible from anywhere on the surface.
6. Shadows would be the same size anywhere in the world
As explained earlier, the sun’s rays reach the planet and hit it at different angles, depending on the Earth’s tilt. Therefore, when the rays fall on an object or person, shadows with different lengths are generated, depending on where they are in the world.
On a flat planet, sunlight would bathe the entire surface at the same angle, so shadows would be the same size in China and Mexico.
7. We would always see the same thing from different places and times
When we are on the beach and we see a ship in the distance, we can see that the further away it gets, the smaller it gets, until it finally disappears from our sight. The same happens when we are on the ground looking straight ahead: our vision culminates in the horizon or some object in front of us.
However, if we climb a tree, our visual field widens and we can see much further. This is because the Earth is round.
On a flat planet, we would see exactly the same thing from any height. The ship would get smaller as it got further away, but it would always be within our field of vision.
8. The rain would fall sideways
Since on a flat Earth gravity would exert its force towards the center of the Earth plane, the rain would fall laterally, towards the center. The further away we were from that point, the more we would need to tilt the umbrellas to the side. Only in the center of the plane would rain fall as we know it, vertically.
9. Water from oceans and rivers would accumulate in the center of the Earth
For the same gravitational reason, on a flat planet all rivers and seas would flow towards the center, where all the water would accumulate. The edges or the most distant places would be practically dry.
10. It would take “eternity” to travel from one place to another in the world
The map of an Earth in the form of a flat disk places the Arctic at the center, while Antarctica forms a wall of ice around it, towards the edges of the plane. If the geography of our Planet were really like that, plane flights between some countries would take a long time, or they would have no option but to cross huge distances. For example, if we wanted to go from Australia to the Antarctic Peninsula, the shortest route would be through the Arctic and both Americas. On the other hand, crossing Antarctica from one side to the other, as they have done many times, would be an impossible journey to make.
What other things do you think could change if the Earth were flat? Would you like to live on such a planet?
