14. Payphone
With dual nationality, Chu Ming Silveira was born in Shanghai, but lived most of his life in Brazil, in São Paulo. The architect and designer was responsible for creating the pay phone, in 1971, but, in addition, left other works relevant to architecture in building projects with her own style, which she carried out along the coast of SP. In 2017, the designer became a Google Doodle as a tribute to the work she has done throughout her life.
13. Circular Saw
Even not having patented her invention in time, inventor Tabitha Babbitt became known for having created the first circular saw for sawmills in 1813, a time when it was very rare to see women occupying this type of position in society.
12. Hand crank ice cream freezing machine
The ice cream maker Nancy Johnson gained fame after registering the first patent for a freezer with a handle to freeze ice cream, in 1848. At the time, she did not have the money to invest in the sale of the machines, so she ended up selling the invention to William Young, who was marketed the product.
11. bra
Tired of wearing a corset, Mary Phelps Jacob was responsible for inventing the modern bra in 1914. With scarves, a ribbon, a needle and some pins she created the first model to wear with a dress during a party. Soon, the story spread among her friends, who started placing orders. Over time, she opened her own business, but years later she ended up selling her patent to the Warner Brothers Corset Company.
10. Light Beacon
You know those devices used for signaling on the high seas? Martha Coston was responsible for developing the product, based on the initial ideas that her husband (deceased) had already outlined. She spent almost 10 years researching and improving the design until she reached a good result, and filed a patent in 1859.
9. Gas central heating
Alice H. Parker was the one who created the first gas heating plant to keep homes warm during the winter, back in 1919. The fact is that her invention is still used today, but of course, in a more modern and safer version. .
8. Solar Energy Heating
Mária Telkes made several important contributions to engineering, especially in the field of solar energy. Among them is the design and construction of the first modern house heated by solar energy, together with architect Eleanor Raymond, in 1948.
7. Modern Refrigerator
Florence Parpart was already successful with other inventions, such as an urban cleaning machine that was widely sold and used to keep the streets clean in cities across the United States, when, in 1914, she created the electric refrigerator as we know it today — an invention that revolutionized the world!
6. Computer algorithm
Ada Lovelace was a mathematician, who is now known as the first programmer in history. She developed the first algorithm for a machine that allowed calculating results of mathematical functions, that back in 1842/1843.
5. Mark I Computer and the COBOL Language
Grace Hopper developed the programming language that served as the basis for the creation of the COBOL language, in addition to being the creator of the term “bug🇧🇷 She was also one of the people responsible for programming the Mark I computer.
4. Camera Monitoring System
Marie Van Brittan Brown invented the first home monitoring system together with her husband in 1966. Soon the system gained fame and began to be used by many establishments and many homes.
3. First line of cosmetics for afro hair
Sarah Breedlovewhich was better known as madam C.J. walker, made history! Woman and black, andshe managed to break the standards of the time in which she lived, overcome poverty and become the richest woman in the United States (who became rich with her own work), having been a pioneer in the production of a line of products for afro hair, in the early 1990s. 1900s. Netflix even recently launched a miniseries telling this great story.
2. Laser for cataract treatment
Patricia Bath crossed many borders during her career: she was the first woman to enter the Jules Stein Eye Institute, in California, United States; the first African-American woman to serve as an ophthalmology resident at New York University; and she achieved many other things during her life. And she was also the one who invented laser cataract surgery in 1988.
1. Road to the Moon
Scientist and mathematician Katherine Johnson made numerous contributions to the American space race. Her calculations were essential to enable many missions, including Apollo-11. In addition, she has been globally recognized as one of the most important and influential women by the BBC. She passed away in February 2020, aged 101, but (and thankfully), throughout her life she received many honors and medals for her pioneering and fruitful work in the field of space science.
These women broke standards and achieved great achievements at a time when the world was even more difficult for them.
