Have you, or someone you know, ever been in the situation of asking for certain food on a trip within the national territory and being greeted with a look of confusion? Well, Brazil is a huge country full of different cultures. For this reason, even sharing the same language, it is common for there to be linguistic variation between different regions, especially when it comes to food.
O awesome.club loves these differences, so I separated 10 foods that have several names, but are actually the same thing. Check it out below!
1. Cassava
Cassava is a food that is present throughout Brazil, but has different names between regions. In parts of the Southeast, Midwest and South of the country, in addition to cassava, it is often called cassava. In the northern and northeastern states, the most common is manioc. But it doesn’t stop there, as it also has other names, such as castelinha, uaipi and maniva.
2. ice cream
The geladinho, that refreshing dessert that is successful in the summer period all over the country, can also have several names. In addition to what we have already mentioned, in some places in Brazil people call them sacolé, dindin, flau, chup chup, dudu or gelinho.
3. Earl fruit
Conde fruit, pinecone or pinecone fruit? In fact, all the names are right. How it is called depends only on the Brazilian state you are in. The first, for example, is more used in the south and southeast. The second is more common in northeastern states. Other names for it are ata, in some states in the north, northeast, and midwest, and araticum, in Minas Gerais.
4. Baroa potato
Baroa potato is another food that has several names. For example, in some places it is known as mandioquinha, in others it is called parsley potato or even parsley mandioquinha. Other possible names for this food are: white carrot or yellow carrot. But in the end, it’s all the same.
5. Corn porridge
Corn porridge is a typical sweet of the June festivals. However, if you are in the northeast region, you will probably know it by another name: hominy. In some southeastern states it is called curau, and in other parts of Brazil it is called jimbelê.
6. Sausage
The sausage, an ingredient always present in hot dogs across the country, is also not called by that name throughout the national territory. In Paraná, more specifically in Curitiba and in some municipalities in the interior, the food is known as vina, because of the German term “wiener”, which is a typical sausage from there.
7. Vinaigrette
Vinaigrette is that accompaniment that is present in many barbecues, but if you go to some states in the Southeast region and ask for it, some people may not know what it is. That’s because, in some places, it is called campaign sauce or campaign sauce.
8. Pumpkin
Pumpkin is another nationally appreciated food that is called differently according to the region. While in most Brazilian states it is known by the first one, in the northeast it is called jerimum.
9. String Beans
The cowpea, as it is known in some places, also has several names. This is because in some regions it is called cowpea, kidney bean, cowpea, cowpea or macasar bean.
10. Munguzá
Munguzá is another typical dish of the June festivals and is known by that name in states in the northeast region. However, in some southeastern states it is often called canjica or canjiquinha.
