At first glance, poliosis can be confused with alopecia areata, but while in alopecia there are areas without hair, poliosis keeps the wires, only white or gray. The condition can appear at any age, including in children, due to a genetic factor transmitted from parents to children.

People who live in Tibet, compared to others who do not live at high altitudes, do not tend to suffer from headaches, dizziness or tiredness, despite living in environments with a lower concentration of oxygen. It causes some people to have excessive hair growth on all parts, including the palms of the hands and soles of the feet. Just as there are people with extra fingers or toes, others have a congenital disease called symbrachydactyly, and as a result one of the arms or hands does not develop properly. The condition is often reflected in one hand that is smaller than the other or the lack of some fingers, such as the little finger.
