10 Brazilian celebrities who have won international awards and fill Brazil with pride (+ bonus)

Brazil is rich in culture and art and has several recognized representatives worldwide. Proof of this are the awards given to our artists at ceremonies in different countries. When this happens, the hearts of many Brazilians are filled with pride and it gives that good feeling to share this accomplishment.

To honor them, the awesome.club selected some Brazilian artists who do very well in awards around the world. In the end, we prepared a bonus with two stars that currently shine abroad and that promise to bring many joys to our people.

Fernanda Montenegro

Despite being known as the grande dame of Brazilian theater, her biggest international awards came from film and TV. In 1999, Fernanda became the only Brazilian to be nominated for an Oscar. In 2013, she was the first to win the International Emmy for Best Actress in Television, for the role of Dona Picucha, in the Rede Globo special Doce de Mãe. Also, during her long career, she was awarded at festivals in France, Germany, Russia and the United States.

Alice Braga

Alice has acted in famous Hollywood films such as I Am Legend, Predators and Elysium, in addition to the national works Cidade de Deus and Cidade Baixa. She even won an award at the Miami International Film Festival for this. Also, she was nominated four times for the Imagen Awards, known as the Latin Golden Globes, and won the Latino Media Awards for her role in the series Queen of the South. In 2018, she was invited to be an Oscar Academy judge, just like our next celebrity.

Carlinhos Brown

Singer, songwriter, percussionist and producer, Carlinhos was once a bricklayer and office boy, but he discovered his talent in percussion and conquered the world. He has already been nominated ten times for the Latin Grammy and won two, in 2003, with Tribalistas, and in 2004, with Carlito Marrón. In addition, Real in Rio, composed with Sérgio Mendes for the animation Rio, in 2011, was nominated for Best Original Song at the Oscars, an institution of which he is a member.

Sérgio Mendes

Sérgio Mendes was born in Niterói, Rio de Janeiro, but has lived in Los Angeles since 1964. He can be considered one of the most famous Brazilians abroad, having placed 14 songs in the Top 100 in the United States, where he toured extensively. In 1993, he won a Grammy with the album Brasileiro. He also won two Latin Grammy Awards: one for the lifetime of work, in 2005, and another for Bom Tempo, in 2010. With Carlinhos Brown, he composed the song Real in Rio, nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Song.

Tom Jobim

The composer, conductor, pianist and singer, Antônio Carlos Jobim, helped to create the sound of bossa nova and became one of the great ambassadors of Brazil around the world. He started out playing in clubs at night in Rio and gained international recognition. So much so that, in 1964, he won the Grammy for Song of the Year, for his partnership with Vinícius de Moraes in Girl from Ipanema. In this dispute, they competed against Elvis, The Rolling Stones and The Beatles.

Daniela Mercury

Considered the Queen of Axé, Daniela is from Bahia, the daughter of a mechanic and a social worker. She started in music and dance at the age of 15, playing at parties in Salvador. Later, with a well-established career, she was nominated four times for the Latin Grammy, winning for the album Balé Mulato — Ao Vivo, in 2007.

Chico Buarque

A great friend of Tom Jobim, the singer, songwriter and guitarist had a good training at home. The intellectual and musical side was stimulated by his mother, a pianist, and by his father, the historian Sérgio Buarque de Hollanda. International recognition came with three Latin Grammys: one for the album in partnership with Edu Lobo, Cambaio, in 2002, and two with Caravans, in 2018. In literature, he also won the Camões Award, from Portugal, in 2019.

Regina Case

The actress, so known for TV soap operas, started in the theater at the age of 16. Until 2001, she was awarded Best Actress at festivals in the Czech Republic, Colombia, Peru and Cuba for her role in Eu, Tu, Eles. In 2016, she won the same award at the Sundance Film Festival, in the United States, for the film Que Horas Ela Volta? And she also won in Turkey and Spain with the feature Três Verões, from 2019.

Ana Beatriz Nogueira

Ana started acting in amateur theater, but soon went to TV and cinema. It was precisely in his debut on the big screen that he received his greatest international recognition. In 1987, as the protagonist of the film Vera, she won Best Actress at the Berlin International Film Festival, Germany, and the Nantes Film Festival, Spain.

Sonia Braga

The actress, who is Alice Braga’s aunt, was born in Paraná and started on TV at age 14. In 1985, she starred in the film Kiss of the Spider Woman opposite William Hurt, which won the Academy Award for Best Actor. With the success, she moved to the United States and participated in several productions, such as the series Sex and the City, Law & Order and CSI: Miami. She has also been nominated for Golden Globe, BAFTA and Emmy Awards.

In 1987, Sônia became the first Brazilian to be a presenter in a category on the night of the Oscars. However, the biggest recognition came for the feature Aquarius, in 2016, for which she won Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival and the San Diego Film Critics Society Awards, in California; as well as awards in France, Argentina, Peru, Cuba, Spain and Portugal. In 2020, The New York Times ranked her among the 25 best actors of the 21st century.

Bonus — Brazilians currently pumping abroad

She started singing at the age of 7 and at 11 she entered ballroom dancing, even teaching. Anitta still plans and puts into action her career marketing. The first international results of this were seen in 2014, when she was nominated for a Latin Grammy and became the youngest Brazilian to perform at the ceremony.

In 2016, he received his third MTV European Music Awards (EMA), as Best Brazilian Artist. Then, in 2021, she won Best Female Artist at the Latin America Music Awards, in Miami, and is one of the great promises of Brazilian music abroad.

Pablo Vittar

Pabllo was born in Maranhão and took jazz and classical ballet classes as a child. As a teenager, he began to sing in the choir and at parties. Currently, she is another great Brazilian international promise. In 2019, she was on Time magazine’s Next Generation Leaders list, and the following year, Forbes said she was “the most popular drag queen in the world.” In addition, she has won two MTV European Music Awards, as Best Brazilian Artist, and a Latin Grammy nomination.
