10 Award-Winning Films Directed by Women

The Iron Lady hit theaters in 2011, directed by Phyllida Lloyd. The film tells the story of Margaret Thatcher, former Prime Minister of England.

The film was nominated for 10 categories at the BAFTA awards (of which it won 3), Film Critics, Oscar (won 1), Golden Globes (won 2) and SAG.

The American romantic comedy was directed by Valerie Faris and hit theaters in 2006. Little Miss Sunshine tells the story of a family that travels in a Kombi so that their daughter can participate in a beauty contest for girls.

Ree Dolly, played by Jennifer Lawrence, takes on the task of looking for the man in a local criminal network.

The film won 17 film awards in total.

The Secret Life of Words

The feature film was directed by the Spanish Isabel Coixet and tells the story of a young woman who works as a nurse for a man who has had an accident and lost his sight. A relationship grows between them in which the Secret Life of Words takes on meaning.

The film was released in 2005 and became the most awarded of the XX edition of the Goya Awards, where it won in the categories of Best Film of the Year, Best Direction, Best Original Screenplay and Best Production Management. It also won the title of Best Ibero-American Film at the Ariel Awards.
