2020 was the third hottest year on record on the planet, a reminder that climate change is continuing its course. “Making peace with nature is the defining task of the 21st century,” said United Nations Secretary General António Guterres. Knowing this, and while landscapes are changing, being aware of what we can lose or gain if we adopt a sustainable attitude is one of the tasks within our reach and one that can define our role in the world of the future.
At the awesome.club we want to show you some of the signs and places on the planet that are examples of the consequences of climate change.
1. Many glaciers on the planet are melting fast
Thanks to their shiny white walls of ice, glaciers reflect excess heat into space and help keep the planet cooler. Yet since 1900 they have been melting rapidly.
2. As long as land surface ice continues to melt, sea levels will continue to rise
3. Species of animals had to move from their habitats
4. Fires consume vegetation and cause irreversible damage in protected areas, such as this one in Bolivia
5. Some places have completely changed
6. Coastline erosion in some places has accelerated and is becoming a hazard
8. The Aral Sea, once described as the fourth largest in the world, split into parts
10. Prolonged drought and extreme heat fueled Australia’s wildfire season
Scientists say that climate change has altered Australia’s climate, and the warming trend seems to indicate that, sometime in the next decade, temperatures could reach a record high.
11. Heat waves also reach agricultural fields
The summer of 2018 was characterized by an extreme drought, and several countries suffered important economic deficits with the loss of harvests. On the left, a 2017 landscape of green fields in Denmark, replaced by dry land in 2018.
12. Bark beetle outbreaks affecting the Harz national park in Germany have increased due to climate change
13. This lake used to be the largest in the Middle East, but it has been shrinking for decades
As the size of Lake Urmia decreases, it becomes more salty, and in this way, microscopic organisms give it a hue between red and orange.
14. Changes in global sea level affect the city of Venice, which is expected to experience floods more frequently
15. This glacier has receded from the cliff edge
16. The ice on the “Iceberg Lake” glacier is breaking up and melting at a rapid pace
17. Huge blocks of ice collapse
The ice blocks fall as in the images, in which the collapse of huge masses of the Perito Moreno glacier (Argentina) can be seen. In order for one of them to retain the consistency of ice, the annual temperature must be low.
18. This glacier that attracts tourists also raises concerns about its retreat (it has lost 60% of its mass)
Located in Central Asia, with the third largest ice deposit in the world after Antarctica and Greenland, it attracts millions of people every year for the beauty of its frosts. Yet somehow these visitors also get a picture of the loss of one of the world’s greatest sources of fresh water.
Have you noticed that the climate has changed where you live? If so, what’s different?
