Sometimes even some commonly consumed foods are not safe to eat. A harmless tomato, a cup of your favorite black tea, or a piece of cheese can be harmful to your body, especially your stomach. And all because the acidity of some foods is greater than that of others, and they cause heartburn, reflux and other discomforts. That’s why it’s important to know the products that can harm your stomach and try to reduce your consumption.
At the awesome.club we study foods that have a low pH and are not safe to eat in large quantities. We can’t wait to share this information with you. As a bonus, we’ve included a list of products that are perfect for a low-acid diet.
What are acidic foods?
Different substances, including the foods we eat, whether solid or liquid, have a pH value. On a scale of 1 to 14, foods with a pH of less than 7 are considered acidic.
pH 0 — a high level of acidity pH 7 — a neutral level of acidity pH 14 — a basic level of acidity (alkaline)
Ideally, our blood should have a pH of 7.35 to 7.45, which is considered mildly alkaline. The pH of our stomach is around 3.5 to 5.5, that is, it is highly acidic.
1. Spicy foods and sauces
Spicy foods and sauces can easily irritate the lining of the esophagus and cause discomfort. Consumption of too many spicy things often leads to heartburn. Be very careful about the amount of spicy products you consume if you want to avoid stomach upset.
pepper sauce pH — 2.8 — 3.7
2. Caffeinated drinks
Caffeinated beverages like coffee, tea and energy drinks can cause reflux and heartburn. They also irritate the esophagus or weaken the lower esophageal sphincter. This leads to the reflux of stomach contents.
Coffee pH — 4 Black Tea pH — 4.9 — 5.5 Green Tea pH — 7 — 10 Energy Drinks pH — 3.4
3. Citruses and juices
Citrus fruits are another acidic food that should be avoided if you don’t want to suffer from heartburn. Orange and grapefruit juices can irritate the stomach and cause discomfort.
Lemon pH — 2.2 — 2.4 Grapefruit pH — 3.0 — 3.7 Orange pH — 3.0 — 4.0
4. Mint
While mint is commonly associated with improved digestion, this is not always the case. High doses of mint can cause reflux and heartburn. Also, if you consume peppermint tea every day, you are doubling your risk of developing heartburn. All you need to do in this case is reduce consumption.
mint tea pH — 6 — 7
5. Tomatoes
Tomatoes are very acidic and can cause heartburn if you eat them too often. You can use sour candies as an antidote to tomato acidity. They promote the production of saliva, which is good for reflux, as saliva neutralizes acid from the stomach.
pH of tomatoes — 4.3 — 4.9 pH of tomato juice — 4.1 — 4.6 pH of tomato paste — 4.3 — 4.5
6. Alcohol
Alcoholic beverages, such as wine or beer, stimulate the production of acid in the stomach, and both moderate and excessive intake can cause heartburn. On the one hand, alcohol relaxes the sphincter valve, but on the other hand, it damages the lining of the esophagus.
wine pH — 2.5 — 4.5
7. Foods high in fat and fried foods
Fatty foods, including fried foods, are not recommended as they allow more stomach acid to enter the esophagus. Products to avoid:
Fries: French fries, onion rings. Fatty dairy products: cheese (pH 5.1 to 5.9), whole milk (pH 4.1 to 5.3), butter (pH 6.7 to 6.9), yogurt (pH 4.4 to 4, 6) Fatty meat: fatty cuts of beef, pork or lamb, bacon, ham and lard (pH — 5.8) Dried fruits: cashews (pH — 5.9), walnuts (pH — 5.4) Greasy food
This fat can cause heartburn because it relaxes the lower esophageal sphincter and promotes the release of the hormone cholecystokinin. Instead of frying, it is better to bake or cook.
8. Fizzy drinks
Soft drinks may seem harmless, but in reality they are very dangerous. Carbonated drinks like Coke, Sprite and Fanta put you at risk for reflux. The bubbles in these drinks expand in your stomach, put pressure on the sphincter, and push stomach acid back into the path that food takes.
Coca-Cola pH — 2.37 Fanta Orange pH — 2.82 Sprite pH — 3.24
9. Garlic and onion
For those who already have reflux, eating garlic is not recommended, which can also cause heartburn and stomach pain. Onions (especially raw) are also on the list of harmful products. If you already suffer from heartburn and love to eat hamburgers, it’s best to exclude onions from your snack.
Garlic pH — 5.8 Red Onion pH — 5.30 — 5.8
10. Other acidic foods you should avoid
Here, we list some more foods that you should avoid if you don’t want them to affect your health:
Corn oil Sugar, molasses, maple syrup, processed honey and aspartame (sweeteners). Salt Mayonnaise, soy sauce and vinegar. Grains: corn, rice, wheat.
Bonus: What happens to your body when you consume acidic foods?
Since the pH of our gastric juice is already higher than neutral, eating more foods with the same acidity level doesn’t help at all. When you consume acidic foods frequently, it can cause certain health problems like gastroesophageal reflux disease (or acid reflux), heartburn, cavities, and even kidney stones.
Bonus #2: Good substitutes for acidic foods
Here is a list of the best alkaline foods you can add to a healthy diet:
Tofu Soy Vegetables and vegetables: artichokes, green asparagus, beets, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, celery, cauliflower, eggplant, Brussels sprouts, leeks, lettuce, mushrooms, peas, peppers, potatoes, squash, radishes , spinach. Melon and banana Oatmeal Wholemeal bread Rice and couscous Grilled duck and chicken Root vegetables, except onions Grilled or baked fish, without greasy sauces Egg whites
Do you usually consume any of these foods? Have you ever suffered from heartburn or reflux? How was it treated? Let’s talk about this topic in the comments section!
